any particular reason why? That engine already makes more torque than HP, and the design of the intake manifolds, heads, and cam are greared towards making torque.

Anyway, you do know HP and torque are connected right? HP is just torque multiplied by RPM. They are always equal at 5252rpm and that is the crossover point were you usually start making more HP than torque. Most modifications you make that increase HP will also increase torque. It's just a question of the design of the parts and if they add power down low or higher up in the rpm range. The easiest way to add torque is usually simply increasing ignition timing, but of course you need a tuned PCM and the right fuel to be able to do that (meaning you have to run high octane).

yep, what aaron said, HP is just a measurement of how much torque at a specific RPM, therefore anything that increases torque also increases HP, but something that increases torque at higher RPMs is usually shown as an increase in peak HP.

Forced induction makes more torque. If you want way low end torque swap to the early 88-94 2.8-3.1 MPFI heads/intake setup. But not messing with the engine, swap the chain and sproket setup on the transmission from a 4cylinder grand am. That will leave some smoke on the street. The v6 gearset is aimed for fuel economy.

he'd actually have less torque with the gen2 stuff, and lose about 50 HP.

Throw on a 3500 top end, headers, a cam from wot-tech and get it tuned.. then you'll be able to spin the tires all day and blow up your trans in the process.

SuperDave I can see it lose the HP but not the torque. I based it on the 3.1l putting 185lbs at 3600 and the 3100 putting the same toque at 4000. Just pushing the toque lower in the RPM range getting it closer to the suck-o gear ratio and torque stall. Good takeoff but its going to be a winded up top.

00grandam- Free torque is to put a ram air setup. Im not talking about the POS stock ram air, but a true ram air. I have it setup on my grand am and it woke it up better than the CAI. I just used a 4in dryer flex pipe and funel end. About 15 from Home Depo. THis requires omiting the driverside foglight. Unrelated car but results was my 90 Taurus SHO I used to have. It gained 1 full second in the 1/4 with this ram air setup Vs CAI.

It don't build boost but makes the engine have less of a pumping loss trying to suck the air in. It gets better with speed. Takeoff feels like a CAI then Downside is you may need a trap door or disconnect it when thereis heavy rain or snow. Done well with light rain on both cars.
