  • 3.1 MPFI V6 question

Im trying to build up my 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.1 MPFI V6 engine. I love this engine as it is nearly bulletproof and very easy to work on. I dont mind increasing horsepower but what would be the best way to really increase acceleration in this engine. Its been a dream of mine for a while to see if a 3.1 could go from 0-60 in the low to mid 6 second range, lower if possible. What would be suggestions to do this kind of thing or do I really have to upgrade the engine as some friends of mine say to do.

The best first start is to free up the intake with a good flowing filter and smooth piping. Then the same idea with the exhaust with larger piping and less restrictive components. As for keeping or replacing the engine, it's really a question of how much time and money you're willing to spend on it.

I hate to have to replace the engine. Its the original engine in the car and Ive had absolutely no trouble with it. I just want to free up some power so it can accelerate quickly. Now with the intakes, would a port and polish work as well as port and polishing the heads, and whats the maximum diameter exhaust I can use so it wont drag or hit the ground. Ive already ordered Magnaflow mufflers and catalytic converter. Wish I could put headers on the car or something similar but I havent found anyone who makes headers for this time of engine. Does anyone know where headers can be found for the 3.1 engine? Im thinking of a performance chip as well as a K&N air filter since I am tired of seeing the check engine light flashing due to a faulty MAF sensor which i replaced. Also would upgrading the crankshaft with a polished one with oil scrapers, a polished camshaft and underdrive pulleys work as well too?

If you're willing to go as far as porting and polishing the heads and intake manifolds you might as well just swap them for the newer SFI parts (from an LG8 or LA1 motor). An unported Gen 3 SFI head/manifold will outflow a ported Gen 2 MPFI one. I'm not sure what all is involved in a gen 3 top-end swap but it's must likely covered somewhere in these forums. Once you have a Gen 3 top-end, a lot of things from www.wot-tech.com will apply to your engine. The available underdrive crank pulley's for these engines are suspected of accelerated wear issues so use one at your own risk.

2.5" exhaust piping should be enough for what you're looking for. I'm not sure what headers will fit your car. Someone else will probably know.

a 92 3.1 wouldn't have a MAF sensor, but the simplest way to get to ~6 second 0-60 times? start swapping parts on from a TGP.

Now if I were to even find an TGP to even work on, I know everything including the engine block would have to be custom. I do have a donor car now, its a 1996 GP with the 3100 in it. One question, can i use the old 3.1 block from my GP or should I just pull the entire engine out of the 1996 GP and start with new parts from the bottom of the block up?

umm, you can literally swap TGP manifolds, upper intake, tubing, turbo, etc and not have to worry about anything other than blowing up the transmission.

and the gen3 block has MANY improvements over the gen2.

Ok I got the 3100 in my car now. Its quicker, but I was looking at Milzy Motorsports website and they have a 3400 V6 race engine block and a Stage 3 head and intake kit. Now, is it possible if I can put this engine in my car? What modifications would I have to make to do so?
