  • 2.8l cherokee motor performance questions

Ok, so i searched around and there were some tidbits of knowledge, just not all the answers i wanted/needed.

Ive got an 86 jeep cherokee with the 2.8l motor. Before i bought the jeep the motor was replaced with a new block and had a comp cam installed, along with an edelbrock torker 2 intake, holley 4 bbl carb and a K&N air cleaner. It runs great and ive had less troubles with the v6 than my buddy who has the 4.0, so swapping would be a step backwards in my book. I just ripped my exhaust off (not by choice either) so im thinking about headers, and in my search i found these http://store.edelbrock.com/688021984...he2and4wd.aspx . has anyone used them? also what else can be done to this motor to give it more torque/power. ive seen threads talk about high horsepower 2.8s, just never the setups or the tricks. i have plenty of garage space to do 99% of everything and have access to lathes/mills and their operators for free.

The Edlebrock headers are designed to work with that manifold and compliment each other. They are designed for the S-10 but may also fit the Jeep. Trying them is the only way to know.

i just got off the phone with both some jeep friends of mine and an edelbrock person, both said the kit will work with my jeep. Guess thats a good thing. now i just need to get the cash together and purchase it before they sell out!

Oh LOL I didn't see that they made a Cherokee specific set. Well obviously that will work well.

I never even knew they put a GM 60 degree V6 in a Jeep? That's different... learn something new every day I guess.

              voice of experience i assume?

im probably gonna go with the edelbrocks, just because they are designed for the cherokee and because they are on clearance.

Still havent gotten my order in yet. Had a small mishap with a deer and reconstructing my jeeps face... But im probably going to go with the headers after christmas, a nice prerunner bumper soon after, and a 3-4.5 inch lift. Anyone got any advice on making this things sound mean exhaust wise? I currently have an "ultra flow" cat, its like its "not there" *cough*, and its got a good sound, just not enough throat or cackle. I dont know if it works on these motors, but back when we used to do exhaust for v8s a trick for cackle was putting the muffler closer to the front end, the longer the pipe the more it cackled...

Man put the cat back in. If you really want the exhaust to rip then run a descent cat and no muffler and 2.5" pipe.

eh its beat to hell. and currently, its sittin at 300 for a 1/4 custom built bumper with a stinger, or part of that for a cat. I dont have a huge amount of spendin cash, so thats why i go with on sale stuff.

Cool. Don't see too many built up 2.8 equipped XJ's anymore; they all opt for the 4.0 straight 6. Looking forward to following this buildup. Late.
