  • 3.4l camaro intake question

    I have a complete 3.1l mpfi motor in my fiero right now and I got to thinking about how I could up the power a little without going as far as the 3x00 swap with custom pushrods. I was wondering if I were to use the 3.4l camaro heads, and intakes on the 3.1l mpfi block would the combination work out ok? I think this would put the motor at 160ish horse? with porting of the fiero exhaust manifolds and the smaller crank pulley I have possibly around 170? Does that sound right and will it work, just looking for some input. Thanks

    The Camaro 3.4 heads are identical to the heads you have on there now, so you wouldn't see any gains at all (unless the new heads have been ported, in which case you will see minimal gains).

      the 3.4 upper intake is a little better than the Fiero one but i agree with bszopi, you won't notice any difference in power.

        I think im misunderstood, the heads that i have now are not the iron heads. they are the 2nd gen aluminum heads. As far as i no the aluminum heads and the iron heads physically are not the same. Seeing that an iron head 3.1l makes more hp than the aluminum head 2nd gen 3.1l i think the heads alone would be an upgrade?

          You are correct that the aluminum heads and iron heads are not the same. The iron heads are actually a downgrade to ANY aluminum head. You have to realize, that the larger bore engine is going to make more power, regardless of the heads. If you look at the Family Tree (http://60degreev6.com/content.php/29...V6-Family-Tree), the 3.1L MPFI iron head engine (1985) makes 135hp. The 3.4L was only produced from 93-95, and used the exact same heads as the previous iron head engines, and made 160hp. Sure, some of that increase in power will be due to the intake, but most will be the increased displacement.

            the custom length push rods are pre made by WOTTECH, you wouldnt have to measure them or anything, just drop them in. i'd throw in a cam too

              aah yes, the Iron heads would be a downgrade for you, you'd also have like 7:1 compression if you didn't change out the pistons.

              A 3x00 top end is the best choice here.

                I would like to do the 3x00 swap but as far as I knew a one size fits all custom length pushrod did not exist because there were too many variables supposedly?

                  there is a standard set of numbers that have been posted around several times for people using a stock or mild cam in a Gen2 block with gen3 heads. Of course checking them to get the perfrct preload is the correct way, but this is one of those situations that you can get away with "good enough".

                  I'd post up the numbers but the last place i remember posting them is on Bstuff and it's down.

                    well then wouldn't using the pushrods from the 2ndgen and the early 3rd gen 1.6 non rollers work?

                      the gen2 pushrods are too short and the early gen3 with the non-roller rockers use the same pushrods as the rollers so they are way too short.

                      you could probably use the gen2's if you also use the camaro headgaskets but you'd be short on preload still.

                        Oh, for some reason I was thinking that the early 3100's did not use the roller cam but it was just the rockers that we not roller. So my next question is are they are stock pushrods from another car that are the correct length? Thanks for all the help
