I have one of those ATV-Motorcyle Lifts...like the one Tom (WalterDude) used to lower his rear engine K-Member way back when...but the problem is that the hydraulic press and pump armature sick up at an odd angle and I would not be able to slip it under the car and not hit the fender well or something, I've been thinking about modifying a 20 ton cylinder to work with it after I use a cutting torch and get all that weird hardware removed,,,, It is just an idea I'm toying with right now.

Say...perhaps something like this would slip underneath the steel cradle and lift up the whole thing ....

Doh! When I looked at that site, for some reason it said $0.00... That's why I commented the price was right. I wonder why it did that... Heck, it didn't even have a pic when I looked at it and there were like 4 of them in different capacities and post configurations (2 and 4 post). Odd.

BTW, that's a sweet looking bike lift.

I'll tell you how I did it in a 2000 Pontiac Transport without a lift. I jacked the body up, removed the passenger side strut/knuckle assembly, bolted the engine/trans together and bolted them to the subframe sitting on top of the legs of my engine hoist so I could use the wheels to move it where I needed and slid it sideways through the hole in the wheel well where I removed the strut/knuckle and lifted the engine/trans/subframe assembly up off of the hoist legs into the bottom of the van with the hoist boom. I wish I would have taken pictures, but I was trying to get the thing done for the family so they could get it back. It was a lucky survivor of a LIM gasket failure and had the cam journals and bearings turn into trash, but didn't snap the cam or wallow out the cam bearing holes in the block. Luckily this happened a day or two before they left on a trip to go from up here in northern Indiana to Florida, so they got a rental and made it down safely.

Necessity being The Mother of Invention...Sometimes She can be a Bitch! Okay... since all solutions breed new problems and I have to accept that, I am going to attack this logically in either one of two way:

              1. Design and construct my own hydraulic "scissor-lift" that I can slip underneath the steel cradle and have somewhere between 12"-18" of lifting room to work with.

              2. Raise the Camaro high and level on another set of those sturdy wooden support columns like I already made, high enough to slide the engine/xnsm out on the steel cradle. Then I can just use a screw line adjustable hoist plate attached to the engine so I can balance the weight of the motor with the transmission attached...and use the 4-Ton Lift to raise the K-Member and contents slowly upward until I can get all six (6) KMBR bolts started and even tightened. My only concern is that when the Lift is relaxed that all the additional weight won't shift the car off of the four wooden pedestals.

these are kinda F**KING CREEPY to work under, how ever, they work and are movable when collapsed.

i'm going to get a 2 post in a few years when i build my garage, or if my parants sell there house and buy some farm land, my dad wants to build a huge shop, so theres alot of potential to do what ever i want, he wants to build a down draft paint booth, i want a hoist, my mom wants a place to wood work, needless to say, i could professionally build and restor cars all year round.

Well Bob... it sounds like at the very least, you have a very agreeable family consensus that putting all these things together seems a great idea. Thanks for the look at that unique scissor lift... mine will be very similar in design... but won't cost a fraction of this commercial version and will only need to support about 1,500 lbs.

The only thing is, I'm a stickler for over-engineering in safety and that means I'll be haunting the local Junk Yards for some heavy duty square stock steel sections that will neither buckle nor bend under the pressure and push of the strong hydraulic cylinder as the scissors open and raise the steel cradle.

Sometimes, inserting self-lubricating bronze bushings for the sectional bolts to ride inside of at each axis makes the actuation of these types of machines work more smoothly and puts less stress on all the moving components. Also, with the same idea of safety in mind, If I make this thing... I will also want the means to lock the lift in place when it reaches particular milestones in position. The reason is that in the unlikely event the hydraulic cylinder fails ...or much more likely ...gradually loses compressive force for the time it takes to bolt up the K-Member and contents, I don't want to have to worry about it collapsing on me while I'm under the damned thing.

There's a reason there are givers, takers and fabricators.

                      Yeah... Working on it....

i'm waiting for my parents to sell there $700,000 home on the lake and move into a small house on a farm and build there shop. if i can use there shop, i don thave to build my own till i buy me next house

whats under the snow is this:

Mr. fabricator, it took a long ass time to cut the 1/4 steel to box the chassis, and weld in bungs to every place there was a hot rivet. took a few drill bits too

Bob... I think John's well-founded chastisement was meant for me... Sorry about the wordy Thread Jack John... It's just that so few of us can actually start and finish such a big project with as much flourish and success as you've managed...and when viewing yours... it builds excitement and enthusiasm to get on with our own when these projects lag behind. If I may... I'll re-direct my last few posts on the steel cradle issue back to my original post on the subject here:

... and just close my sidebar to your Epic Post here by mentioning that two of these "mini-scissors" electric jacks would actually do exactly what I want...

...with one placed or even bolted up underneath each end of the 24" X 48" wheeled steel plate/cradle, they can be actuated with the mere touch of two buttons to either raise or lower the front or back ends of the steel K-Member cradle to almost 14" and adjust or align the K-Member mounting holes and bolt everything back up under the car. Once finished...they can be retracted off the deck and the wheels can take over for being able to slide the cradle out from under the car.

As for your own project delays Bob... The last time we had enough snow down here in Florida deep enough to make Snow Angels in, Florida was still part of the continent of Pangea...So I have nothing like your valid excuse to explain why my own engine swap has been taking so damned long.

Can this (these) Electric Jacks be powered by a common ATX computer power supply?

Thats awesome!.. I loled at the engine stand, and the fiero engine in the background.

What did the camaro weigh before you started and then after? obviously the customer was concerned with unsprung weight etc, Gn drums
