ok i am going to ask the dumbest quetion ever

but where does the extra 10hp come from in the van 3400? PCM tuning? or is there actualy a diffrence?

looking for a engine and the one i fould is from a van so thought i would ask

its from the computer tuning, even I think they don't have 10 HP more I think it was bogus just to be on par with the rest of the industry.

Tune it and you will get a lot more from that engine, they can make upward 200Hp if tuned right.

eh i belive the 10 more i have an olds van and it ran a 17.3 @ 78mph not bad for having a 4,400 lbs race wieght lol it also dynoed about 153.2 FWHP taking into acount 18% drive train loss that's around 181hp

i plan on tuning it i was going to get some headers and a HAI and take it to zzp for tuning they said there tuner will work with the N-body (they use HPT)

I had a feeling about the 10HP difference with the LA1's in the vans.

Which reminds me, I need to stop being so broke and get a tune for the GA.

I'm just torn on whether to go with MP Racing or Milzy Motorsports.

the van? only external diffrences i have noticed is the lateral engine mounts like on a w-body (actualy the u-body van is heavaly based off of the w-body)

the cam timing may be diffrent though not sure

no experiance with eather. i have heard of issus with milzy's 3800 tune though not sure of there 3x00 tune

didn't you get like 10 hp just by changing the air filter and muffler? i think i saw your dyno vid and it wa 155-ish FWHP

I gained about 10ish from my setup, the car laid down around 160HP to the front wheels, so it helped. A tune and headers would really bump it up, but that's as far as I'd go with the motor in it's current condition. The car hit 129K the other day, and I want it to remain reliable as it is.

As a Malibu guy I've always wondered this too.
                    Whats the diff between a 2000 + Malibu 3100 and say a 2000 + Buick Century 3100
They ARE rated differently in power; having both cars they also perform/sound different.
                    Is this all intake/exhaust related?

I used to find the buick's performance better until I did a CAI, 56mm Tb, TB coolant bypass, cleaned the maf etc.

theres 2 things that you have to keep in mind:
1, a van is less aero dinamic, and will requirmore touqe to get moving and stay moving, ontop of the fact its carrying a larger load (7 passengers) so the idea of it having more power is not a question of why...but how...
2, the odd vehicle will have a different power due to the assembally line becuase they ran out of cam X (persay) for vehicle H, there not going to stop the assembally line to produce that cam, there going to put in what ever cam they have left on the shelf. They might not even have difference cams, could be computer tunes for more touqe vs. HP in a van.
                      Its GM after all...

Yeah, I remember something about the exhaust is different on the vans and might allow "better" flow?

the air intake is also quit a bit bigger where it gets the out side air

That big on the U-body vans? Damn.

The intake setup is similar to that on the W-body cars.
