BUT, if I were you, I would not use the 4 speed as it may very well grenade with the 3500's power going through it...

Look for a (284?) 5-speed and it should hold up reasonably well. You will need a neutral balance flywheel for it.

As for what car, just make sure it is an LX9 3500 and not the vvt version

Will the shifter and clutch hydraulics off of the 4 speed work on a G6 6 speed? if I'm easy on the 4 speed will it live?

Alot of people feel the 4 speed is actually the strongest of the transmissions in the Fiero, but with no overdrive, the engine turns higher rpm at highway speeds.

as long as it'll live behind a 3500 for a while, I'll be happy, I plan to upgrade to the F40, but funds are lacking right now, and if the 4 speed hydraulics and shifter won't work, then I can't afford it right now.

also, if any of you have a 3500 taken apart, I need some measurements, mainly how wide the space between the intake ports above the fuel rails is on the lower intake, inside to inside.

        TIA-

Experience on the Fiero forum where all sorts of engine swaps have taken place favor the 4 speed Muncie found only on the V6 engines as the strongest and most dependable of the bunch and the Isuzu transmmissions as the weakest. They've been beating on theses trannies with larger V6's and V8's and except for outright abuse they hold up fine. You just have to be sure of what you have, avoid the early Muncie 4 speed which has a weaker case than the later versions due to less ribbing for reinforcement. Their are 3 final drive ratios available for the four speed in the Fiero, the economy version is rare and was made the first year. The performance version will give you high revolutions on the hwy but it's about the same as what the 3 speed automatics of that time ran and with proper tuning you can still approach 30 mpg with it. With a tuneup and fresh tires I hit about 28 mpg hwy in my Fiero with the high performance 4 speed and I was running a turbo on a low compression 3100 due to the iron heads over the aluminum head pistons so the high compression of the 3500 should more than make up for what my engine lost due to compression.

The 284 tranny is rare also and the clutch for it isn't cheap if you're concerned about expense. The best option short of what an F40 will take you for is a later model fwd 5 speed something from a 90's V6. Some have hydraulic throwout bearings but they can all be made to work with the Fiero linkage, just inquire of Rodney Dickman on the Fiero forum who has a store that provides the reasonably priced adaptor for these trannies. The problem with the Fiero trannies is that even the latest model is 22 yrs old.

The G40 is actually the F40 first and second design.
