Playing with the pipes i have, and it looks like i'll have to make every pipe around 30" long. I'm going to have to be doing some crazy loops inbetween the trans and the rear of the motor to lengthen then runners, how ever 6-1 will be the easiest and last to do, and be fairly straight pipes, but pipes 3 and 5 would have to have near or over 460* total of bend in loop

i still gotta throw the empty block and trans in the car to make a mock up cage to know how far pipes can go, but i know my W body has alot of room. Alot. if it works out great i'm going to make 2 sets of these headers

So your going to combine 1-6, 2-3, 4-5 what advantage will this have? It looks like you pairing each firing one after the other. So what is the difference if you were to pair 1-2, 3-4, 5-6? With your setup the fact that there is a 120* separation in cylinder firing I don't think there will be any advantage or disadvantage is having these pairs mated together since there will not be any overlap between the 2 cylinders.

The old 180* header system is made on a V8 to help scavenging so that each header side got a pulse every 180* of crankshaft rotation. In the 660 if you just made one header for each side you would get a pulse every 240* of crank rotation. I think what you are trying to mimic is the Tri Y design often used on headers but they don't rely on even firing pulses on each bank but they do help to prevent reversion in the odd firing banks of a V8.

betterthanyou is right. Since the cyls are paired on opposite banks, only thing you are doing with that drawing is, seperating the banks further apart than if you shared a cyl on each side while sharing one from opposite banks.

Also, I have examined all the FWD 660's for header fitment, and you are going to have a lot of piping that a single 2.5" pipe barely fit's through - and actually rubbed stuff in Loner's car with a 2.5" downpipe and the end of a 2" collector.

with 30" primaries i was hoping to get better bottom end, and hopefully a better sound, have you seen how much space there is on a 05 montecarlo?

That's exactly what I thought it sounded like. I like it. To me it does have a nice exotic sound to it. It sure made that 2.8 sound nice. I wonder what a DOHC would sound like with something like that reving to 7k.

i can't remember how high he pulled it, but aaron(banned on like 90% of automotive forums) on w-body had a 5 speed LQ1.... that thing sounded NICE as it was getting up there...

dropped in the empty block and trans today, i have so much room for these headers back there its not even funny, i'll have room for longer runner length if need be. Picks and jigs tomorrow!

Got my flanges at 9pm lastnight, started building at 3-630pm today

tomorrow i should be able to finish up the rear and make 3, 2-1 merg collectors for the rear pipes to joint in.

I need some input from you guys, i need to have these split in half for service and install pretty much on the to center of the trans bell housing. I would like to use 3 2-1/2" band clamps and re-size them for 1-5/8", but then i run the risk of it not being perfect and leaking. and i really would like to do a but-joint connection. if not i'll have to get some tub streched for them to slide together and again, make a clamp. I'm leaving 3/8-1/2" gap between the 3 pipes that run together.

Snow mobile ball joints would work great, but take up a significant amount of room compared to v-bands.

The ones we used on Redbird's headers leaked like hell, i have them on mine as well but haven't tested them yet...

I'm looking into bike exhaust clamps as there made in 1 5/8" but there only single bolt clamps, identical to a band clamp though

                            Blam?

To make sure they are tight, I loosen the flanges a bit when cutting the pipe between them, so that when welded up, they draw in tight, the springs are to keep them from seperating during heat cycles - not to pull them.

i almost started building these wrong today, 1-4 3-6 2-5, accept when i look at the crank the first journal and the last journal are 180* apart....if i built it off the crank it would be 1-6 2-3 4-5. i gotta make sure this is right before i get an further, and that probably wont be till next weekend
