  • few questions about UIM and LIM swap

hello i am new here, though i browse the forums a lot. As you can tell by my user name driving a 95 cutlass (supreme) and i just have a few question. I have the small port 3100 and i know doing the UIM and LIM can both net me some power gains (and doing things such as getting them UIM and LIM ported) but i heard some talk on a forum (cant remeber which one) that the 3100-3400 UIM was designed to enhance low end torque i want to know if this is true. Also i looking in to getting a fender intake for my car, but i don't know/ and scared to relocated the battery.
any help would be nice. Thank you in advance
forgot to mention, sort of new to the car/ engine work, i understand the concepts and the UIM swap is the 3100 large port(ported) vs a 3500(ported)

If I can fit a 3" intake around the battery in a Cavalier, without moving it from it's stock position, you should have no problem doing the same in a W-body.

i dunno if my car is just not right or something but my battery takes it up all the space there, i do have an air intake running beneath the car i just don't like having to take it off and changing every time it rains.
Edit: or maybe i don't know what i am doing, i just went out and checked and couldn't find a spot to stick the intake. Thank for the reply

The W body is nothing like a J body then because you have to move the battery to do anything useful for a cold air intake. The small port stuff doesn't improve low end compared to a large port, so there is no real reason to consider sticking with it.

thanks for the info, but i guess my English is bad as always i was asking if the large port helped with torque compared to the 3500 UIM

Not much if anything. The 3500 upper has a broader powerband. I hope to do a before and after dyno comparison this year to put numbers to this.

Thank you so very much, i was thinking of going to the route of the 3500 UIM, but after your advice (and i know enough to know that you are well respected and know what your talking abou) ill just grab the 3100 large port LIM and UIM, now i just got to get the brattey moved. Once again thank you so much

Read both of those. You need to do something about the rocker arms if they aren't the roller type already.

i have read those many time over (good articles) and i don't know if i cant do anything about the rocker arms short of a head swap, something i have no experience doing, and frankly i'm scared to try

Edit: Found out the 95 l82 has notches for roller rockers, but i still don't have any idea to put them on

The W-body has loads more space around the battery and same area on the opposite side of the car (where the ECM is), than the J-body.

I had to cut a hole beside the battery tray, and would have to do the same in a W-body, but is defiantly do-able.

If you have the notches, then its as simple as pulling the stock rockers, guide plates, and studs and installing the roller rockers.

it would be interesting to see real world number to back up the claims.

OK, thanks everyone so the roller rockers should be easy (i hope) and for the battery i should move it to the opposite side of the engine bay?

The battery has to go to the trunk to make things easier. That is how my 92 grand prix is. I have a 91 and 92 GP and a 94 and 95 cutlass and none of them have "plenty of room" anywhere near the battery for 3" tubing without putting the battery in the trunk.

Ok so the trunk. Do i just buy a battery relocation kit?, is there anyway i can keep the stock pieces that screw onto the battery and move it to the truck. (i have helped my brother with hooking up subs and amps and lights so i have some idea of how to move the battery)
