  • 3.1 crankshaft casting numbers?

    Whats the difference between the crankshafts for the 3.1 that have 981 and 268 casting numbers??

    1996 Beretta
    3100 SFI TURBO
    T28 60 Trim Turbo at 9psi, Stage 1 turbo cam mms, lifter upgrade springs mms, P&P heads, ls6 Valve Springs, Ported exhaust manifolds, Hyperuetectic pistons SP, 3.29 trani, MSD 8.5 wires, open exhaust, Pulstar plugs, 3400 intake manifolds, ported TB, 36 lb/hr injectors, RCI Fuel cell, Walbro 255 pump, A/C Bypass, and much more.

    981 has the 7x ring for MPFI, 268 is the RWD crank that doesn't have it.

      so can i use a 268 crank in my engine its a 3100 fwd??

          ICM? idk thats why i ask i ordered a crank with casting 981 and it was junk so they sent me this one....

            The notches in the crank are for the crank position sensor. This sends a signal to the ICM (ignition control module) which then tells the ECM the position of the crank so that it fires the spark plugs at the right time. If you got a crank without the 7x ring, then your car basically isn't going to start.

                  If your 268 has the notches then it should work. Go figure GM would do something stupid like have the same casting on 2 different cranks... lol

                    ALL Cranks cast after 87 were internal balance and had the timing disc cast into the crank. Weather it was machined with notches or not depends on the application.
                    1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

                      wow thats messed up yeah i compaired the cranks ive got 3. 2 981s and a 268 they r all the same. they all have 7 notchs and they r all in the same place on all the cranks so im gunna use it i guess...

                        I always thought a casting number was used to keep track of a certain cast and when the part started to show flaws they would scrap that casting number mold since it is wearing out.

                        but as you have seen as long as it has the 7 notches you should be good to go.
