    how crappy is the stock GM ignition system? would i notice an improvement getting all MSD stuff?

    Most people on here will tell you the stock GM ignition is better than any aftermarket system, so keep what you have.

      Coil and plug wire upgrades will be a plus with a modded engine. Also, don't go for all the hype with respect to spark plugs, it's much more important to get the right heat range and gap.

              I don't know who told you GM's ignition was crap but zzperformance's 9 sec grand prix proves otherwise.

                Dittos. A lot of the OEM is crap rhetoric usually comes from people who have failed to identify the root faults with their systems. These same people usually never come back and tell you that their aftermarket system didn't run worth a shit either because they failed to correct bad grounds or some other problem that had nothing to do with their ignition. Worn, loose and corroded connections also play havoc with the system and are inadvertently corrected during the refit so they believe the new stuff was superior. Look at it like this. The manufacturers spend millions in research and development to come up with systems that can be reliably mass produced, meet performance and emissions standards and still wow the Car & Driver editors. I can't count how many times I have turned hot rods into winners by replacing bogus batteries/cables, correcting grounds, installing correctly rated alternators, etc. Even something as innocuous as routing sensor harnesses away from the high voltage secondary leads can have a pretty dramatic effect. I will say this, however. If you up the squeeze, adding secondary energy capacity (coils/wires) will help.

                  GM DIS ignition was by far the most powerful and reliable OEM ignition system availible until recently...
                  1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!
