  • 3.6 VVT dimensional questions

I looked through the specs and didn't see these numbers:

    Block deck height
    Piston compression height
    Piston net dome volume
    Compressed head gasket thickness
Piston deck height (in the hole or out of the hole?)

Most of these could be for either, but I'm specifically looking for the number from the Direct Injection engine.

The wild hare I got is to convert a VVT Northstar to DI.
    Current:
\'87 Fiero GT: 12.86@106 - too dam many valves; ran 12.94 @ 112 on new engine, then broke a CV joint
\'88 Fiero Formula: slow and attention getting; LZ8 followed by LLT power forthcoming
\'88 BMW 325iX: The penultimate driving machine awaiting a heart transplant

    Gone, mostly forgotten:
\'90 Pontiac 6000 SE AWD: slow but invisible

What does a 3.6VVT have to do with a Northstar VVT?

You'll probably have to go to GM to get those numbers, or find an engine to measure them yourself. I have the original 3.6 press release, and none of that is in there, let alone any changes from the original to the DI.

I don't care about the 3.6 VVT pistons.
The Northstar can be overbored from 93->94mm to use 3.6 DI pistons. This is a "free" way to get the right piston crown geometry for DI in the Northstar.

but what about actually modifying the heads to accept the DI injectors?

I have access to a very well equipped machine/fab shop and am friends with/related to very knowledgible machinists/fabricators. Unless the large intake valve angle of the Northstar means that direct injectors just won't fit under the intake ports, I'm confident I can install the injectors in the engine.
