  • got a 3400 whose rdy 4 a build?

well like the title says i bought a 3400 2nite. its got about 60k miles so its barely even broken in. came into the shop for sumthin and got replaced on warranty. it still ran and drove so im thinkin it was a good buy. and the real kicker is i only payed $20 for it. hows that for a deal? i can either build a n/a monster or a turbo monster. thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. im thinkin turbo seein as i have 2 diff turbo's layin around. but a n/a monster would be great too.

Budget? What are the specs of the two turbo's you have?

Any info you can give us will help.

well one is a te04h which is rumored to be able to support up to a 4 liter engine and the other is a garrett tb2506. but im heavily considering after reading a build thread on here grabbing up a holsett turbo off a cummins diesel and dialing it down to ~ 10-15 lbs max daily and maybe running 20 lbs at the strip. i can pry get a basically brand new one for 100 bux or less including travel charges 2 pick it up. all day long im trying to compete with a 300-350 hp neon with a 16g turbo. he rebuilt the engine over the winter and it seems to be running ALOT stronger this year. only prob is he has longer gear ratio's and a lower fdr. so it kinda evens out in the end. either way im shooting for 13's any better would be great. any worse would be be great also. but im figuring even if the engine came out at stock hp lvls with 15 lbs of boost i would be looking at a min of ~300-350 hp daily with strip boost it would come out to ~400 hp but thats also with perfect world scenerio's and wishful thinking following the 1 lb of boost= 7% increase of power. then every 10 degree's the air is cooled is worth ~ a 1% increase. so even a small interfooler would help especially with the higher boost settings.

the budget would be basically a cheap rebuild/freshen up. preferably under a grand for the time being. it will only be a 1 season engine with some daily driving on it. grab new bearings from wot tech? studs for the bottom end and top end. cometic head gaskets? new pistons rods if i can find the right set for the right price. i heard rumors that the stock 3400 can handle around 15 lbs of boost before puking a head gasket. stock fuel system will stress past 10 psi. currently im running 22 lb/hr injectors. which should be suffecient but the 36 lb l67 injectors are looking better every day.

What sort of car is this going in? That would have an impact on your ideal hp since the more the car weights, the worse off you are.

Lol,I still got a better deal I think.
I bought a 1990 turbo grand prix for $50 for the whole car.
Put gas in it and started it right up pretty much.

Wouldn't mind running across a 3400 for $20 for parts though.

I don't think the garret will get you to 350hp,the t25 on the tgp i've got runs out about 10lbs and less than 300hp from what I understand.

I would suggest changing the gear ratio. It isn't that hard and it will be easier with the engine out.

im planning on tracking down a 4t60e out of a van if i find one for the right price. i will have a 3.42 or 3.43 overall final drive ratio vs my 2.97 that i have now. and you found a much better deal. lucky. and im not plannin on the garrett at this point. im lookin for a holsett off a 90's cummins. much easier to make good boost and much more reliable.

The van trans can be done but they aren't the way to go in my opion I think they all had 3.29 fine pitch diff. And the steel side cover has studs around the left half shaft out put makeing it difficult to put the N-body side cover on it. I would either change the chain and sprockets or get one out of a W-body with a 3.4L DOHC. You still need to change the side cover but it will bolt right on. That would give you the option of changing the diff to get 3.73 if you wanted.

i havent been able to find the 3.4 tdc cars or tranny's around here so that wasnt really an option for me. i could just stick with my fdr that i have now. i know that having longer gears would have a better effect on the turbo spooling but i would suffer at the strip. but with plans of driving the car for a summer car i think 3.73 would be a bit extreme lol. and i didnt even think about the side cover in all honesty. thanks for pointing that out for me. i could possibly just grab one of my old grenaded tranny's and change the chain ratio. it would pry work out fairly well.
