  • my 3500 hybrid formula

Well I wanted some experianced opinions and suggestions for my build, this is what I have planned so far:
    1. 05' 3400 block with low km 80,xxxkm
    2. cylinders bored out .020 for new pistons
    3. forged pistons availble from the WOT store, ideal for a 11.5:1 ratio,
    4. street/strip heads from WOT store
    5. head gaskets to accomplish 10.9:1 ratio (not sure which ones to use)
    6. Double roller timing chain (is this going to last a long time?)
    7. 3400 upper and lower intakes ported to just gasket match
    8. throttle body (i have no clue what size to use)
    9. pacesetter headers for 3400 (not sure if they will work for the 3500 heads
      http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PSM-70-1207/
    10. Dual exhaust is a possible plan with dual FlowPro resinators/mufflers
    11. Custom CAI from the lower bumper cover
    12. Dyno tune
    13. trans will have a shift kit
    14. Not sure what to do with the cam...(check out my intensions)
    15. ARP studs and bolts for sure, there to cheap to skimp out on

    intensions for the car are:
    1. 2005 monte carlo
    2. daily driver
    3. lowered 1" all around
    4. 19x8.5 rims, 245/40/19 tires
    5. I want to have enough power to light up the wheels, you know, have some fun in the Baba car
    6. Noticble chug at idle
    7. Decent fuel economy to the point where I won't regret the extensive motor work over swapping in a much larger motor,
    8. hope to be at or above 25 MPG some how I'm getting 31-34 with a heavy foot, some how...
    9. No plan's for FAI
    10. Possibly N02 in the future, but not more than a 30 shot for S&G's

    EDIT:
I forgot to mention Questionable items:
    1. Roller tip rockers
    2. lifters (is there anything that will improve over stock)
    3. pushrods (suggested for better lifter preload)
    4. replacing bottom end bearings and cam bearings (i have no clue how costly this could be)
    5. 3500 upper intake (thanks for pointing out Red bird that I need to get the lower aswell)

Also i didnt know about the LX5 TB swap, i'll pick one up tomorrow, thank you very much Redbird, i need to save as much money as possible, and still keep this reliable
    Thank You all In Advance

if you're planning to use 3500 heads you HAVE to use the 3500 lower intake as well. 3400 lim ports don't line up with the 3500 heads.

and the pacesetters WILL work with 3500 heads, although you might make some calls and see if anyone has any S&S's left in stock anywhere, they were much nicer quality from what i hear.

for the cam, i'd say stage 1 or 2, if you want it to act tame on the street, but still have good power. it's always a compromise though.

get a WOT-tech 65mm TB if you wanna spend the money, it'll bolt directly to the 3400 intake, or to the 3500 upper with an adapter. or, for a significantly lesser chunk of change, get an LX5 TB and adapter. 65mm and still stock GM. modding the TB cable bracket is easy pie.

              1) stock rockers are fine til the scorpion rocker come out. 1.7:1 FTW
              2) WOT-tech has spring kits for lifter, replaces the springs inside the lifters, they don't pump up all the way at idle, makes for a better idle, and they're more stable at high RPMs
              3) you can get the pushrods at the same time as the cam that's your best option.

bearings aren't bad, a set of cam bearings is like 30-40 bux and about the same to install, and you can do all the rest, i think they're about 50 bux a set, rods and crank. BTW form what i've seen, DON'T use sealed power cam bearings.

S&S headers are pretty pricey, i could buy a set for my truck and T/A for the price of a pair for my monte. and longtube ones too! but there in consideration. Its already going to cost 3k to get the motor together.

You can't order from S&S at the moment from what I have gathered...

And they ARE NOT pricey IMO, since I have been building headers, I have grown to understand what all goes into them.

it's different when headers are built by hand VS a robot.

Robots don't need insurance, don't join unions or need 8 hours between shifts. SBC headers are mass produced in factories. S&S and the rest of us hand make our headers. Our time is worth money, plus we don't get a huge discount in materials like Hooker, Headman and the rest of them.

hey guys, dont get me wrong guys, people have to get paid for doing work, espesially good quality work. I'm just saying in comparison to other headers like i had said. but none the less in the consideration part, the headers arent that much more compaired to the cheap paccer set

Look at it this way.....I live near one of the top Honda/Acura race shops in the country (King Motorsports) - thier custom-fabricated headers start at $1500US. There might be a bit of fleecing in there, but they perform excellent and are worthy of being museum pieces.

well i'm looking threw the cams, the street performance isnt what i want, plus its power band is 2000-5500, and the street/strip is 2000-6000

With a street/strip cam how much will this cam effect my fuel economy if any, will i have significant power gains, and will you be able to hear i have a cam at idle, or if i drop my idle a little bit with programming? from this point, i'm going to ask how much more power could/would i gain with a strip performance cam? like i want this car to be a mean and maintain the ability to drive in the city/hwy with out problems. its had to say what i want with out sounding like a kid, Loud, Lobey, Fast, Drivable, Affordible, Drive-able?

Question with the lifters and replacing the springs, should the retainers be replaced aswell? i've read in my hotrod magazines that that is where engine builders have issues, if its not the needle bearings its the retainers destroying the engine.

I was able to get 30+ MPG on the highway with a pretty extreme cam, city was a different story though... lol
