  • ARP 3.1 Head Stud questions (aluminum head)

Well I have the ARP head Stud Kit From ARP

since the 3.1 60* V6 has head bolt locations in the block that don't bottom out....................

they thread through into the Water Jackets in between the cyl's

    how do you install these????

I called ARP and the guy said to CLEAN all the coolant residue out of the Head Bolt holes and use a thread sealant when installing......

also remove all oil and petrol products from both the studs and the hole locations.....before installing

    questions i have

-how far do you thread them in???? (just after the threads disapear?)

    -what type/brand of thread sealant????

    any help is welcome

This is interesting. I have two different 3.1 VIN T blocks here. One of them has blind head bolt holes, the other has holes open to the water jacket. When did they make the change?

On mine, I ran a tap down every head bolt hole several times to ensure that they were perfect before I installed my studs. I used the block with blind holes, so I didn't worry about sealant. I ran the studs in until they just bottomed out, then backed them out slightly.

I ran mine until they were all the way down. But, the set for the 2.8 were not long enough, so I got another set that were longer as well. I just used rtv sealant in the holes that went into the water jacket.

"I just used rtv sealant in the holes that went into the water jacket" - Seems like a simple solution but, what temp rating RTV did you use?

Loctite makes a liquid thread sealant which is what I have used. It's not thread locker. I don't know the number, but someone at your parts store should know. It's a clear dark purple liquid, not the milky purple one.

Do not use RTV on the threads, Use a liquid "pipe sealant"

the problem with RTV is its not made to seal up threads like this, that and the main problem is its a thick goop that when torquing down bolts/studs you get an improper torque reading due to it.

on my engine i have no coolant passages open, due to this i use a light film of oil to provide proper torque readings.
on engines with open head bolts to the water jackets, i always us GM pipe sealant #12346004
