  • ¿Gen III cam in Gen I block?

Im in the midst of planning a 3400 head swap on my TBI 2.8, and wanted to know if I can use a gen III cam in my gen I block. Im getting the 3400's heads, pushrods, and lifters soon, and want to know in which direction im heading...

Also, before the cam swap, can I use the 2.8 cam w/ the 3400 lifters and pushrods, or what would be the ideal setup for the valvetrain?

Since the 3x00 cam is a roller cam, you need roller lifters. For roller lifters, you need some type of anti-rotation device. Standard roller lifters with anti-rotation bars won't work because the spacing is different for the 60 degree engine lifter bores. Gen 3 blocks have provisions to bolt an anti-rotation block to the engine block. In order to do this on a Gen 1 or 2 block, the block itself would have to be modified to make it work. Its been done before, so it is possible. Just not sure its really worth it.

Brad, don't forget the lifter galley being covered after a certain amount of lift.

This topic has been duiscussed many times.

also, don't forget, if you go to the roller cam, your timing chain options are going to be limited.

you are much better off going with an aftermarket flat tappet cam, the stock gen3 cam isn't much better than what you have now.

A Comp 260H is a fairly common choice, it'll like the better heads you are using as well.

          Eww.

Not a fan of the 260h outside a stock P(E)CM with no tuning.

with the 1.6 rockers that puts it up to .469 lift with 260 adv on a 110 LSA, not extreme but better than the stock cam for sure.

the Crane H272-2 would be great but it's kinda hard to find those any more.. lol

So all this means im sticking with my hydraulic lifters and a hydraulic lifter cam then.
Are the hydraulic lifters compatible with the 3400 pushrods???

It seems like I can source a crane H272-2...
Although its kinda expensive, if any of you guys have a hydraulic lifter cam under $200, hit me up

you will need custom length pushrods when using gen 3 heads on a gen1/2 block.

Maybe need custom pushrods, maybe not. The Gen 2 pushrods are close, but will need to be measured at final assembly.

Flat tappet cams are $290 and that includes new magnum lifters.
