  • Destroking 3.1L...easily done? Worthwhile???

I'm not even close to considering destroking my 3.1L, but I was thinking about it today, and if you used the 2.8L crank in the 3.1L then it would be the 2.8L correct, and there shouldn't be any problems in doing this? And, theoretically if the valvetrain was beefed up a little it should allow the engine to rev to 6500rpms or more with no problems.

I was just thinking that maybe a 3.1L bored .030 over and destroked would be a good turbo candidate, and would maybe be a fun build one day.

Anyone think this would be a good setup and worth the trouble?

i was gunna do this with my 3.4L and make it into a 3.2L by using an over bore piston for a 3.4 with relocated wrist pins for 2.8 crank and using the 2.8 crank of course. It would rev high and make more hp per cubic inch.. I have been informed that still it would not be able to stand up to what a 3.4L would be able to make with the same mods. So it would net me less hp and less torque until high rpm which it would not be very useful for street use. Anyways I was talked out of it and I am stickin with my 3.4L displacement. Good luck, and it would be cool to do but its a risk

You don't need to change the stroke, etc of a 3.1 to get it to rev high. that's more a function of cam, intake, heads, exhaust than anything else on the 3.1 (past 7000, they claim the rods are at risk too). I rev mine past 7500 all the time with no problems.

I'm not planning on doing it to my car, I was just thinking about maybe doing it as a project in another car. There is no way I'm destroking my 3.1. If I was able to I would stroke it before I would destroke it. (I'm pretty sure there aren't any longer stroke cranks available...although I may be wrong??)

However, I don't think it would hurt me much on the lowend in my car if I did do it to it. It will break the tires loose at 20mph as is so even being an automatic it wouldn't hurt me there, if anything it will help me because I'll have an easier time getting traction. But like I said, not gonna happen to my car.

I was just wondering what everyones opinions were on this and if it would help or not.

Well, since it's turbocharged, maybe a progresssive boost controller? I have a 2 stage setup on mine and I know about traction issues, I break them loose at 65 mph, so.....

Suspension helps a lot with traction. Is the suspension stock?

I'm not worried about spinning the tires too much. Its nice to be able to every once in a while. All I have to do is learn how to launch the car without spinning the tires. Everything on the car is stock besides the engine and exhaust which really haven't had much done to them. I'm just trying to get the power I want out of the engine before I worry about the suspension and tires and all that. Once I'm trapping 98-100mph then I will start worrying about everything else.

But thats not what this thread is about, so no need to get into detail about that.

Thats crazy that you can break the tires loose at 65mph though, my dad can barely chirp them at 45mph in his GTP that runs 12.2 @ 115 and has almost 500ft.lbs. of torque. He has 245/50/16 Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires though...maybe you just don't have too great of tires or something. 65mph is pretty fast.
