  • Truckloads of Torque!

    Hi all,

I was originally planning a hi RPM hi compression 3.4/3500 hybrid for my truck. I even bought a 3.4 camaro junkyard shortblock already.

Well now I got a consession trailer to haul around and hopefully start a buisness soon.

I know a hot cammed hybrid would be unbearable with a tow, so what would you guys reccomend? A real torque monster I guess im looking for now, lower the rpm the better. Still would like some real power too.

    Any reccomendations?
    FWD pistons?
    Tight cam?
    Still 3500 Heads & intake?

    All info appreceated.

Aluminum heads would help with both horsepower and torque. But they do add complexity and cost and iron heads will get the job done in the torque department. Since you are limited to a flat tappet cam then I would choose the Comp Cams 252 cam with some 1.6 ratio rockers. Tight quench, compression and good ring seal are your friend when making torque. So don't just look to the expensive parts to get what your after.

Also, what's your rearend ratio? I would think 3.73's to pull a concession trailer but you might get by with 3.42's,both are easy to find in the wrecking yard.

this is with a fairly wild cam...

You can go with a more aggressive cam and still make tons of torque. i can put mine in 5th and roll up a 70% grade hill at 1000 RPM.

I'd use the 3500 top end for sure, and a Comp 260 cam with the stock 3.4 pistons. You'll make great torque and tons of power. Leave the iron heads in the 80's where they belong (Just picking on betterthanyou) :P

Right now it has a 3.44 open diff.

I scored a 8.8 mustang axle that will eventually go under it. So its not an issue yet. (4.10 more than likely)

Superdave- Im guessing thats with RWD pistons and a healthy comp ratio...
Ya think its streetable enough for some real pulling?

Perhaps advancing the cam would bring the RPM range down....

that's with stock pistons, 9.8:1 scr.

If i could tow with the car i would, it would probably do a better job than my '06 Trailblazer.. but it's a track car

any mustang diff is not going to be a 4.10 unless someone changed the gears. prob a 3.55 at max

Ooops, Ment 4.10s will likely go in it. It has 2.73s currently

Stock pistons in a 3.4/3500 yeilds like 11.5:1. Am I missing something?

                Those dyno numbers are amazing!
