  • bad idea?

ok, i think this is a bad idea. please tell me why.

the 87 TBI S10 im running needs some help. it runs great, gets 26 MPG, and doesnt use any oil or make any noises. its currently rocking a 4.3 TBI with some porting, a ported and polished intake, slightly tweaked bin, and hedman long tubes. its still pretty damn slow.

after playing with the CR calculator on this site, i figured out the the 3100 aluminum heads would net a 12.3:1 compression ratio. which is supposedly runable on pump gas. it would require a PCM swap, intake, and heads. anything else, other than custom pushrods? the 3100's from the early 2000's models are shwing up in pull-a-part for reasonable prices, and wiring harnesses and PCMs are pretty cheap too.

so, please tell me why this is a bad idea, and why it wont work.
    thanks
    Michael

there is nothing wrong with using a newer motor... especially when it has MOAR PWR!!!!

i think you got everything nailed down...

but there are better sources than me for hybrid build info...

Since I've build a few of these s10 engines I feel somewhat qualified to answer. If you have the 2.8 use the 4.3 tbi but use the 2.8 inj on it and add a 260 camit'll work with your ecm .The cam will really wake it up with the mods you've already done. The best thing is to find a rwd 3.4 from a 93-95 firebird/camaro,rebuild it if needed and bolt on you intake etc. and use the 4.3 tbi with the 4.3 inj. The 3.4 is a bolt-in using the parts from your 2.8 and you will still beable to drive your truck while building. There's a guy[bettethanyou] on s-series.org that has some good info on his website,he might post here too, check it out.

^ while all of that was valid, it sounds like dusterbd13 wants to build a hybrid...

and betterthanyou will undoubtably be posting in here soon...

yeah, im trying to keep the 2.8. at some point, i will go3.4. at some point. just not this one. i figure since the surrent mill is running so good, and is in such good shape, i wanna see what i can et out of it till it finally wondows the block. its a primarily track driven truck. then ill swap over to the 3.4 setup. i know the 3.4 will use a DIS system, but then again with a hybrid build ill already be setup for the multipoint....

anyway, no one has told me why this setup wont work. there has to be some reason.

thats the thing, it WILL work(IIRC)... most people are scared away by the valvetrain stuff...

but get info from someone who has actually done it. forcedfirebird is always the first to pop up in my mind...

                  meh, close enough.

any ricer within 5 miles would come running to either phrase.

that's not a bad idea and it will work.

you'll need custom length pushrods (or atleast to measure to see if you can get away with stock gen2 3.1 pushrods).

for an ECM and harness i'd grab one out of a 91-94 3.1 v6 cavalier. You will not be able to use the distributor from the 2.8 so that's your one major problem.. easy solution is to pick up the TCE external crankshaft trigger and modify it to work with the RWD crank pulley.

your accessory brackets will need to be tweaked since the aluminum heads have the holes in different spots, your headers will bolt up just fine after you slot the mounting holes about 1/8" or so.

The WOT-Tech store might be able to come up with a chip to run it, or you can pick up the OBD1 tuning equipment and tune it yourself.

your HP gains will be very good, even better if you swap to a bigger cam like the Comp H260 or any of the Crane powermax cams.

Good luck, it sounds like a fun project!
