  • Cam recommendation

Well with the cooler weather and the oncoming winter my thoughts have turned to upgrades to the car.

I think I have probably gotten about all there is out of a stock 3500 valvetrain, so it's time to spend.

    The requirements. (limitations)

Auto with a converter under 3000 stall.

    3.73 or 3.94 FDR

6500-6800 Rev limit (I'm a coward and want to be able to drive it home more often than not, so that is as high as I'll shift it.)

And it must have some semblence of idle quality, although I can live with alot.

I'd prefer to buy it from WOT, but I'm open to suggestions. Cam, springs, rockers ?? I already have headers, 65mm TB.

    Thanx

I'm almost tempted to re-run this just to see what he would recommend to me now... its worth the 30 bux even if I don't buy the cam right away.

get ready to be amazed.. a cam really wakes up a 3500

use Ben's service, he'll set you up right.

Comp 26986 springs, stock hardware, stock rockers, custom length pushrods (Ben can take care of that too), use a 99 or older timing set from GM and I think that's it...

Lifters? I have to do that internal spring swap right?

Or is there a lifter that drops in?

your stock lifters will work fine, but you can get the stiffer springs from the wot-tech store.

I was going to recommend buying Sanjay's cam... but...

              225/227.6 duration .050" .603/.562" lift 111 ICL 111 LSA

seems pretty wild and machine work required...

Definetly 100% use the selection service and get a WOT cam from here. Comes with pushrods, the whole deal. Ben is very well organised and I wouldn't get it anywhere else.

I run a 210/214 @ 0.050 dur with .506/.506 lift, and well, you've heard my car, it idles very well at about 950 RPM pulls 15-16" Hg. If anything my cam is a tad on the mild side for you I think, but you have an auto and heavier car so I don't know, ask the expert.

I'm going to prepare the sheet and send it off to Ben first of next week.
Although he's mad at me right now, so Lord knows what he may recommend. YIKES!!

For now though I still have 6 events left this year.

What would you have me do, quit the business or leave this site. What you suggest is that I cannot have a part in both.

                    I was kidding!!

I have purchased WOT products in the past, and they are all excellant and the service superb, and would expect nothing short of a professional and expert opinion.

                    Or I wouldn't waste the $30 ($35 Canadian.)

I'll do the sheet on Monday.

Eric, with the big cam and stiff springs, have you thought at all about spending the extra money for the TCE timing set and getting the necessary machine work done?

                      14.60 @ 96.33 for now...

                        3.73 or 3.94 FDR

No way I'd go that high on the final drive. Especially if you are going to change the cam and increase the hp. 3.91 final drives where being put in 140hp 4 cyl J bodies and N bodies with 4T40E's. With a high HP 3500 your gearing will be so high you'll be flying through the gears and not giving the engine a chance to pull. That is, if you can get any traction in first and even get moving. I think with chain and sprocket changes in the 4T45E you can get like a 3.42 and 3.63 FDR or something around that. Those would be far better.

I already have 3.73. Works perfectly and has about 1000 runs on it.

3.33 EP LSD and 33/37 drive/driven gear set. Traction is not an issue. 1.98 60'.

FD (2095) converter with 225-50-15 BFG Drag Radials at ~18-20 pounds.

U do however have to live with 3500 RPM at 70 MPH. No big deal.

I am going to look into a TCC lock up mod that I keep hearing about and a little more converter. If it eventually overpowers the drag radials I'll just buy slicks.

And as far as going through the gears too quickly???? What the hell is that about?

Good cooler and Royal Purple fluid and this 3t40 is quite happy, but could maybe use some more gearing to click the traps at 6000 or so.

It's not that complicated. Didn't know you had a 3spd so your gears are probably spaced wider... but in a trans with more gears and a decent amount of torque and HP, if your final drive is too high and your gear spacing isn't wide enough, you can have major traction issues and even once you get moving and get traction you can run through the gears too fast never letting the engine make effective use of it's torque. You waste more time shifting than letting the engine accelerate the car. If you have a broad torque band you are better off using less gears and leaving it in gear longer. Kinda like the harley davidson race bikes that only use 2 gears at the drag strip.
