  • ECM upgrade question

Sorry if this is repetetive,... well I know it is because I've seen the answer before but I've been reading thread after thread for a couple of days and I can't find it now.

There is a factory ECM upgrade I can run for my OBD1 from a Cavalier or Beretta or so, correct? It'll be for my 88 Camaro with a 3.4l V6. Is it the 7727 or the 7730 I should be looking at? Or is there a better choise for me other than aftermarket. I think I might have some computer issues so if I need to replace something I'd like to try to upgrade.

    Thanks, Art

The '7730 can be used in place of your MAF ECM with a pin change and taking out the MAF in favor of a MAP.

Ok, so it probably would be better for me to wait untill the 3x00 top end swap to do the ECM as the 3500 will have a provision for the MAP sensor. What's involved in the pin change?
But the 7730 is the way to go eh? Now that would be a new ECM with a stock chip from a ...? Or is 7730 specific to a model. And that's still an OBD1 with a removable chip incase I get into eeproms later on right?

You also have provisions for a MAP now . All you need to do it tee off the vac port in the back of your upper manifold and grab a 3.1 MAP/bracket. It mounts unter the cowl near the pass side fender (near the A/C fan/evap can).

Interesting. Makes sence though. I've got a brand new MAP from the wife's old 3.1MPFI Cav in my toolbox so all I need is the bracket I guess. I think her's was on the intake though...
Now I've already got a 't' off the intake to go to the the brake booster and the other I think to the tb so I guess 't' it off the tb one?
          Cool, thanks alot!

Tee off the one that also goes to the cabin for the air conditioner. It's on the back of the upper manifold. I used the TB port and got false readings (may have been just a fluke, but worked fine when I put it back on the mani).

Ok are we talking about the same intake? My 2.8MPFI Camaro intake only has one outlet on the back of the top plenum. It splits into two right at the manifold. To the d-side it goes to the brake booster and to the pass-side it culrs under the top plenum and goes directly to the back of the tb at the TPS with about a 3/4 hard plastic line.
I can't think of vacuum lines going to the cabin for the a/c but I'll have another look. Was the bracket and MAP from a 3.1 Camaro or Something else you are talking about. Maybe the 2.8's and 3.1's are that much different in the vacuum routing.

Ok so a little research confirmed what I was suspecting. The 89 or 90 cars depending on V6 or V8 changed to the MAP system from the MAF and that's why the confusion on my part. I didn't realize the Camaros used the MAP untill 4th gen. I saw the rear of a MAP intake on the 3.1 and they have an extra hole drilled and tapped on the top plenum for the MAP vacuum lines. And I did see the bracket you mentioned too gotta do some scrounging now.
Now my choises are to either remove my intake and drill/tap the plenum or... Well do I have another choise? Can I get absolute pressure from anywhere else? I'd of course take the easy way out if I could heh

buy an intake that already has the MAP port drilled...

can't get much easier than that... and they're cheap as hell too...

Yeah I could but my intake's all p&p and paited to match. Less work to drill this one.

You can use the MAF ECM, but he will still want to swap out to the tunable '165 MAF. This will still require a pin change and ECM swap, and the '7730 is a much more documented setup. IIRC you have the '301 ECM that has absolutely no support for it.

I almost forgot, you will want to add the knock sensor into your '7730 (or '165 even if you take that route). You should already have the sensor there since it was a standard item on the 3.4, probably there, just not hooked up.

Here's a good documented case for the '165 swap if you don't mind staying MAF...

You can try taking the MAP signal from the back of the TB. Like I said, it may have been just a fluke on my part and didn't do any further testing to make sure. It won't hurt to try it before you take the time to drill your UIM.

That's another good site for a conversion. I looked at another one before for the 7730... See if I can find it again.

My bad on the vacuum line thing, it does not go to tb.. It didn't make sence as I was writing it but I could picture it for some reason. The d-side PCV goes to the tb not absolute pressure. The t from the intake t's again to smaller lines which I could probably get a MAP line from. Couldnt' find where they went as they disappeared behind the motor but looked liek one came back to the charcoal can and the other to a pot on the interior coolant lines... I think as Forced described.
