  • 2.8 build questions

I was given a 86 jeep cherokee with a locked up motor but fairly new transmission and transfer case so i decided to take another 2.8 i had laying around that came from a 85 S-10 pulled it apart and found it was super sludged up and had pretty bad cylinder wear. so i took it to a local machine shop and they said it had to be bored .60 to clean up the cyl walls, when i removed the heads from the motor it had a few burned valves so i scrapped them and decided to use my 3.1 heads that have been ported polished and larger valves installed these heads have never been put on a motor.

so will my projected plans work and if so what else could yall give me for more power, also would anyone recommend me a camshaft, I'm gonna need all the power i can get to pull 35-12.50's

Did they use the block that had to be bored .060" or did they recommend you get another block?

What kind of 3.1L heads are we talking about? Aluminum or Iron?

the machine shop said the block going .60 over should be fine they pressure tested it and vatted it the 2.8 that came in the jeep was ran without a drop of oil in it until it locked up (pissed off boyfriend, chick gave me fubar remains) i had to unbolt EVERY main and rod cap before i could get the crank to turn to remove the torque converter and flywheel. Turns out the jeep and S-10 have different flywheels the dime has a three bolt torque converter and the jeep has 4 bolt converter pattern.

Anyways these cyl heads are iron stockers and from a previous experiment i had with a 3.1 i put in a camaro and the car got rear ended before i had a chance to install them, I can't recall the specs of the valves, I'll try and find the spec sheet the head shop printed out for me later on.

thanks for reading my long ass post!!! help is appreciated and all warnings given are taken seriously.

well talking to the machine shop owner this evening and he informed me that this block had the smaller crank journals and he claimed it was a car engine but it had flatop pistons my 3.1 for my camaro had dished pistons. he said he never heard of a aftermarket camshaft for these motors or an aftermarket carbed intake

anyone know where i can find some of these items i'm going to start assembling it this weekend and would like to put a cam in the motor before i put the motor in the jeep and definatly before i pu the 6 inch lift on the truck

Personally I would find another builder that knows more (guessing he can tell you anything you wanna know about a small block V8 tho).

The 86 year it was odd for a chevy to have the smaller journals but I've heard of a number of the other makes come with them. Edlebrock makes a cam and intake and thats the only intake still being made that I know of. There are a number of aftermarket cams being made (personal favorite is comp cams). Also a number of companies doing regrinds.

well the motor i'm building is supposed to be a 85 the engine that came out of the jeep is unknown since thie machinist said in 86 the block should stil have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump the engine that came from the jeep doesn't the engine i'm using does the jeep doesn't have an in tank pump.

so neo do you think i would be able to find the cam and intake on edelbrocks website.

also does anyone make long tubes for this engine?

                Thanks for the plug Robert

I have 2 brand new cams in the box. One is a "truck" cam (252), just ask betterthanyou how it works out for him.

It's also nitrided (that was $100), but will sell it for $140...

Should be able to, last time I looked at one of their paper catalogs the parts were in there.

Lots of companies make long tubes for the engine but none for it in the jeep.

Yes you most likely have a small journal crank and it will also be externally balanced. It is not the most desirable combo but if cash is tight it will work. If you have a bit of money to throw at it then I would find a large journal, internal balance block and crank. It will not work with a mechanical fuel pump but and electric pump is easy enough to install.

http://members.shaw.ca/betterthanyou...haft_guide.htm < Those are all the cams you can choose from. I don't think I would really spend money on a new intake. I would match the intake runners to the intake ports of the head since you already have good ones to work with.

FYI 2.8L's all had flat top pistons. The differences between a FWD Car block and RWD Truck/Camaro block would prohibit you from swapping blocks because they are quite different.
