  • help me get ideas for a 3500 build

just want ideas for a 3500 build.

i figure ported top end and mill the heads

what kind of CR could i get with the stock pistons? (i am not sure what kind of head gaskets are available)

any one have an idea of a cam? plan on having a good N/A engine fist then boost later but not sure.

any other ideas would be nice

Milling the heads may only get you a few tenths of CR, so figure 10:1 or therabouts (factory SCR is 9.8:1).
Use the cam selection service through the store to find out the best lobe profiles for your particular application.

CR of 10 is it for the stock pistons? hmm to bad custom ones are so expensive i wouls like to get a CR of 11 out of it (hey the 3.4/3500 hibrids are getting higher and are fine)

oh well maybe i will get alot of money out of now where lol

those 3.4/3500 builds aren't planning on running boost though.

there are two schools of thought on boost

low compression + lots of boost

high compression with less boost to make the same power

now, i'm more fond of using stock compression and adding boost for a few reasons, number 1 being you won't lose much fuel economy and power out of boost due to the lower static compression ratio.

if you're going to try and run 11:1 with boost, its going to need to be limited to maybe 4-5psi, run premium gas like its going out of style, switch to colder plugs, and a LOT of tuning to get the spark table to where it won't knock...

boost would not be for a long time (at least 4 years) heck it might never see boost

but ya i do not mind using premium every car i have ever bought has need it except the van but thats my parents car

thanks. it also seems i am right on using a TPI fuel pump as well. (some G-body guys where not sure if it would be enough)

i have noticed the stock cam is a little anemic in the power area

When you say "build", what kind of budget are you throwing at it?
Took a break from working on the car. Got some better tools, got a better shop, got a better job... Its time to burn metal!

Although I think Dave's custom long-tube headers also go a long way towards helping his big output.

undecided as of yet depends on the condition of the car when i get it back (currently trying to get back my old 82 GP that was stolen that i recently found it was hiding in canada)

if the car needs alot of work the engine will remain stock (215 HP is more then any factory engine) or i may not put it in at all really depends.

but say in a perfect world for the N/A build (always planned on using the stock bottem end for the N/A set up) i say enough to get a ported UIM/LIM heads and a cam. i have no idea what to do for headers. if the 3.4L camaro headers will fit Gen III heads i will use thoughs if not i will probably make some even though i realy do not feal like doing that

his headers are a nice. i think even on a stock engine you would see some nice gains

the stock logs are horrible, so of course, but true long-tube headers are about as good as it gets, unless you're gonna run zoomies

                          lol.. thanks

Take a look at Redbird's 3500 swap. Stock bottom end with a .506 lift/270 advertised 111 LSA cam, P&P'd top end and 3500 "header" manifolds with a decent tune. He's making almost 300 @ the crank and an easy 260 WHP.

The car is daily drivable and runs mid 13's
