  • Quick and simple 3900 performance tips!!

I have a 2007 3900 and I was looking for some simple things I can do to get some more power out of her. I have already done a K&N air filter within an modifed air box and an aero turbine muffler as well. The thing just feels dead off the line till about 3 grand than it really wakes up al the way to 6k when it shifts. You would think for a big 3.9 it would have more low end than what it does. So anything you guys can suggest would be a great help!

Tuning would probably go a long way, especially with a variable cam. I don't know what is programmable though through the HPTuners setup.

VVT for the gm V6 is not a tunable option at this time. maybe with a few more software releases....but not yet. the tuning valve is not an option either

So I guess something like a hypertech is out of the question for the 3900? Man I counting on getting some easy power out of it like I did for my 94 3.1, sure do miss that car. That 3.1 would lit up the tires all day long yet I can barly get a chrip out of the 3900, go figure.

          I have a 3900 in my G6 vert.

Slow as a three legged turtle until you get it above 3500 RPM or so.

The drive-by-wire actually seems to hold back throttle body opening until it
is good and ready to allow it.

for both the vert owner and the 2007 (GT Sport?, I'm assuming it's a G6), I'm sorry to say the reason you have no low end is probably due to your exhaust. For the vert, the pipes are actually crushed at factory to allow room for the x-braces. For the '07, many of the guys over at g6performance had the same problem when they switched to a "cheap" exhaust. Slapping on a muffler will increase horsepower, but at the expense of low end torque. You have to be very careful when designing your exhaust to maximize torque. That probably means getting a shop to bend some pipes for you, or buying a pre-built cat back system.

Also, getting a 93 octane (or 91) tune would really help you out. I have a 2006 G6 GTP with intake and tune and it's like a totally different car than when I bought it.

Edit out a lot of the torque management and it should wake it up off the line. They put a lot of TM in the new GM cars to protect the trans now since the cars weigh a lot more and have bigger motors now.

A muffler isn't going to cost you torque unless it's more restrictive...

i tuned the car myself....on the road and on the track. most of the fueling for these cars is spot on, alot of it has to do with timing, tq management, and trans settings to make it feel, shift, and perform right

Well how can I tune this thhing my self?? Should I get a power programer like a Hyertech or what? As one person said already I think alot has to do with the tq managment. I also noticed that the engine seems to get too much fuel. I will wash my car and the nice shiny Borla tip and in about two days of driving or so the edge of the tip is already black again. Plus when it is warm that stock converter really stinks and the exhaust smells alittle rich as well. I thought about putting a high flow cat on but I don't know if i want to go through the hassle.

um there is no handheld tuner for these cars. you have to use HPtuners. buy one would be my suggestion. mail order tune isnt big on these cars, and its a PITA anyway for something like this unless you have a spare PCM to work with.

Well should i get the VCM suite or VCM scanner from hp tuners?

VCM suite. whether you want the pro edition or the standard is up to you. The PRO contains black box data logging, as well as you can input sensors (like wideband, EGT,) in it. They both come with the same amount of credits ( to do about 3 vehicles. Sappy sells them i THINK....you will have to ask him
