  • how long would it last??

How long would a 3.1 or 3100/3400 last turning at 4500 rpms all day long? The reason i ask is my boat motor died and i think this would be a good upgrade if the motor would last!

If you put new bearings in it and have it balanced it will last a long time. Bearings are cheap. I paid 150 to have mine balanced.

You will be fine with the 3100 or 3400 engine. They have very hard valve seats so they will last under marine use. GM still sells the 5.7L Iron head marine engine and even those heads have seat inserts for durability. Other than that just follow good build practice and it will last for a very long time.

tune one of these babies up & mate it to a boat jet turbine (not sure of the proper name)-its like a big version of what the jet ski's use, & im sure you'd have one hell of a runner!

Most likely they are VERY common boat motors.

i know this engine would be a good runner in the boat i just didnt know if it could handle the higher rpms continuisly. It will be replacing a 2.5 @ 120hp so im thinkin 175 hp or better will really make her haul. Would i be losing anything by running an obd1 setup on it? To me this would be the easyest cause i have the harness and ecm already.

i don't see why you couldn't so long as everything is water protected/proofed... i'm running 3x00s on obd1...

Well OBD I is easy if you already have it. But the OBD II systems that were mounted under the hood of late model cars are weather proof and would fare much better.

Don't worry about the motor turning 4500 or even 5000 RPM all day long. It will do it no problem.

My obd 1 setup is out of a cutlass and has the water proof ecm that was mounted under the hood.

You should be alright then. I only recall OBD I.5 and II ECM's being mounted under the hood starting in 94 or 95 but there were so many damn cars out there no one can keep track. If you have a True OBD I ecm (not the non hackable OBD I.5) then you should have a good time with it.
