  • 3400sfi prone to cracking under pressure?

I have been told by one person that the 3400sfi block is prone to cracking. his basis for this belief is the history of the block. here's what he said (this is a direct quote from an email.)

"Before Pontiac built the 3.8 GTP and the GM variants, they offered a turbo car that used your block as the base. There were a lot of guy's out there and one I knew personally that kept breaking the block itself in any real performance application, the car only lasted two years before GM pulled the plug and built the GTP cars many years later"

assuming this history is true, would that mean that the 3400sfi is prone to cracking?

Is there anyone here that can point me to proof this is not true?

Like it was said on the other forum the engine he is talking about is the 3.1 turbo that was available in I believe 89 and 90.

But long story short no they are not prone to cracking.

right, the 3.1 but since the design from the 3.1 was used to develop the 3.4, when they did this did they fix the issue?

I guess you're telling me they did but this is a guy that is pretty confident in his knowledge so if you could point me to some type of proof it would be a big help.

      thanks.

I have never hear of a 3400 SFI cracking unless it had water in it at winter time.

I've heard of the 3.1 holding well over 25 pounds of boost and hitting over 500 horses on a stock block. So it's not an issue that I'm aware of, it sounds to me like you're buddy is a boat anchor fan and not hip to the jazziness of the 6/60.

                14.60 @ 96.33 for now...

sounds like the most reasonable explanation.
