  • Turbo on a 2.8?

    Hi all,
Forgive me if this has been asked before but I can't seem to find it. Anyway, I have a 1985 Pontiac 6000 with the carbureted 2.8 V6, and my brother in law has a turbocharger off a Buick Grand National. Is there any way this can be put onto my 6000 or is he better off just selling it on eBay?
    Thanks...

Invest $20 in a book by Corky Bell called Maximum Boost. Read it cover to cover. Leave it in the john, read it some more, then read it again. The you will understand what it takes to build a comprehensive turbo system - and you will be able to make intelligent design choices - rather than rely on some half-baked advice from half-wits like me.

The Turbo is just the start you will need a turbo exhaust manifold;a pressure box for the carb; additional fuel pressure while on boost to prevent the fuel from being pushed backwards; an intercooler would be nice and you need to pull spark advance while on boost. Oh also, you will need to provide oil and water feeds and returns to the turbo's center section and plumbing for the presszurized air from the turbo through the IC and then to the carb box. Oil squirters on the piston undersides would be a nice touch. I'm sure there is lots I've missed

Unless you are capable of doing lots of fabrication on the cheap, I'll weigh in and say don't do it.

Wow... sounds like a lot more work than I had imagined. I was hoping for a weekend project but sort of expected something like this. OK, onto the important question... anyone want a turbocharger off a Grand National?

Would a 3400 (or 3800) be easy to install? Because in addition to the 2.8 V6 6000 I mentioned, I also have a 6000 sedan that was originally a duker but had the engine seize up on it... I have access to a full garage with engine hoist and everything, and wouldn't mind putting a mill with some actual power in there. Hell, if I thought I could do a V8 relatively easily, I would.

newwave, do you know the specs of the turbo, has it been rebuilt, and how much are you asking. PM me.

It's not mine, it's my brother-in-law's. I do not think it has been rebuilt, but I will get with him and find out.

Hey cool, I just noticed you're in Clyde. I'm down in Cullowhee, but heading back to the Triad area for at least a few weeks.

Cool, if you ever have a nagging need to help me work on my 6000 projects, let me know and come on up.

farmerz24, do you need the carburetor too? It says "Quadrajet" on it but he doesn't know much about it. It will probably need to be rebuilt.

If you want power in your A Body check out what this guy has done, it's for X bodys but A and X Body share the same undercarriage and are almost identicle in the engine bay

                    You have many choices.

If it has a QuadraJet attached to it, it is a 1978 - 1983 Turbo from a 3.8L Buick (Sport Coupe, Turbo T, T-Type). I think the compressor housing has a special ROUND 3 bolt oulet that attaches to the intake manifold.

A similar turbo was used on the 84-85 3.8L SFI V6 engines.

I'm not sure about the flow capacity of the above turbos, without the intercooler, there was no reason to flow all that much air because of detonation.

The turbo from an 86 - 87 3.8L SFI Intercooled V6 is a regular style T3, this is the turbo that is in a form everyone is used to seeing.
