  • Lifter mod FYI

    lately we've been talking about the LT1/LS1 lifter mod and I figured i'd bring some new info to light.

    the LS1 lifters seem to have better springs than the LT1. The other night we did the mod to Redbird's lifters and compared the LS1 internals to the LT1. I didn't get any pics but i'm sure i could if requested. the LS1 springs were taller and a little stiffer. The check valve spring seemed to be the same or very similar.

    Maybe Redbird remembers more details... my brain is at 50%.. been painting my hood for the last 2 days in the garage.

      lol, ok.

      If i only had a way to test the spring pressure... I'll have to figure out something.

        all i rememeber is that we decided that LS1 > LT1. i think i left the extra 4 lifters with you didn't i dave? if you feel like it tear them apart and compare. i don't care lol, what am i gonna do with them? :P

        those lifters also only had like 50k on them, would high-mileage springs be worn out or what? that could be the difference.

        Cammed 3400 --> 224whp 210wtq
        Cammed 3500 --> ???

          u can get a vise spring tester from summit, though i dont know how low they read they may start at 50-75#'s, but the tester is only like 12 or 15 bucks iirc

            well I hate to burst any bubbles, but if you try to buy a brand new lifter for ANY roller SBC, LS, or even the 3800, they are all NOW the same lifter, have been for a couple years. used lifters are orig equip and dated to what was then, but now with new lifters, they are all exactly the same....not just same design, same exact part.

              weird.

              I did take apart a 3800 roller lifter (from a '88 park ave) and the check valve spring was the same as the stock 3x00 but the plunger spring was a little stiffer, not like the LTx ot LSx ones though.

              I'll get pics tomorrow if possible.

                    So I could order a set of 3800 lifters to modify my 3400 ones... Rather than buying 16 LS1 ones.

                          I just bought LS6 lifters, brand new GM set... Hopefully its the heavier duty ones you speak of.

                          Also here's a question for you all to ponder... My car is now making more valve noise than it did when I built it, and when I ran my 14 sec passes... it got noisier over the beginning of this season and after I ran it at epping last year.

                          And now I just went to an 1/8th mile strip down south for Bfest and I couldn't do any better than a 9.8... Logs look ok, but richer than I originally targeted for... anyone else think my lifters have since decided to stop holding and are now pumping down badly? Car does feel very sluggish... not as bad as a stock 3400 but pretty damn close. And a 9.8 1/8th mile definitely says something is wrong and its not making any power.

                          I'll be pulling the motor apart at the end of this week or beginning of next to inspect them and also I'm doing a compression check before its apart. I need to find this issue.

                              no where near that bad... but it just sounds like a loose rocker.... which could easily be a dead lifter or a few of them... they do have about 15k of a milzy cam on them, and now 10k if not more of this setup.

                              why do you keep re-timing yours? Its set it and forget it, kinda like the slow cooker.
