  • How to: Lashing valves after Roller rocker install

So... I bought a srt of Comp Cam Roller Rockers a while back and the time has come to put them in my 2.8L Beretta engine.

I got all of the rockers in there no problem. But now something about lashing my valves?? How do I do this? I understand what it is and why I need to do it... but I dont know how to do it.

Only method I have seen is to tighten down the rocker arm bolts while spinning the pushrod with another hand.
Once the pushrod does not spin, you've hit zero lash. Then, turn the bolts another 1/2 turn.

Anyone got any better/more proper ways?

No need, they are not adjustable. Tighten them down and thats it. Those are roller tip, not roller rockers however.

hey man I think there is only one way of doing it because we dont adjust by torque spec. I did a 1.6 rocker swap on my 2.8 and here is my post for it hope it helps. good luck.

He may have the wrong rocker studs then... ones that came with his rockers are threaded too far and would require a lash procedure to be right, he said his stock studs aren't threaded far enough to get any preload when on zero lift.

Can you just bolt the 1.6 ratio rockers on the factory studs and have them be preloaded already?

As he told me he put them all on and many were loose, only the ones under lift were tight.

Styluss, What type of nuts were supplied? Self locking? If not then you cant do my lashing procedure I sent you because they will back off and loosen up. If they are like nylon nut locking nuts, obviously without the nylon then you can do the procedure, but as some said 1.5 turns for preload, not 1/2 to 3/4... I was unaware it was that much also.

I think I have it all under control thanks to your write up 3400.
I just need a second set of eyes to help me do it now!

Do the 1.5 turns preload as the other thread noted, just as long as no one else objects to that. Also those nuts are of a locking type correct?

I believe that they are as they look like "crush nuts", the top of them is slightly bent in. Well, I got them all in there and it seems to be running juyt fine. I only drove it about a mile or so but today I will be taking it to work for a nice 19 mile drive. Seems a bit more peppey, but I think the computer needs to map itself out to deal with the extra breathing room a bit.

Cool, glad everything went well. And yeah I was hoping they were crush nuts, that should work fine. I'm assuming you don't have any unwanted valve train noise since if you did hear any I doubt you would be driving it.

How much preload did you put on them?

If it's not too hard I suggest rechecking all the rockers after a few good long runs, like say 500 miles in just be sure nothing loosened up and all is still preloaded well.

I will want to do that for sure, as I dont want a silent killer to destroy this engine. There does seem to be a small bit of "tick" coming from in there now, but I assume that to be a part of the roller rockers being in use.
The car is still a little slow on the initial acceleration, but now when it hits 1500/2000 rpms, it takes off. It always did take up to 2000 rpms to really get going (the CAI) but now it really lets go.
I must admit this was a scary endevor as it was the furthest I've even torn into an engine... but thanks to your help 3400, I got it all back together just fine it seems. I still am a little weary I did not do something right with the lashing of the valves, but it runs and idles just fne so I guess I got it right!
Now, for that 3x00 top end swap...

I have a full 3100 in my garage if you want the top end... LOL, that would be a bitch to ship to you though.

And you never answered... How much preload did you do?

Just over one turn. I heard 1/2 to 3/4 from so many people, then was told 1 and a 1/2 on here... so I went with a median amount. But, I will be rechecking it later as to make sure it's all good.

                          OH NO!!!
I was on my way to work today and hit a highway on ramp and right at about the shift into third the engine started to make a large popping noise! Oh crap I think something is horribly wrong in there!
I have yet to dig into the problem, but I really hope nothing is toast and it is an easy fix!!!

It seems I broke a pushrod guide. I got that one fixed...
Then, I cracked another pushrod guide! Well, Yesterday I took out all of the pushrod guides and beveled them down so they wont break anymore. Now, I just need someone to help me lash the valves again today and I should be golden!
