  • base ignition timing with an edelbrock cam ?

Ok so I have an 83 s-10 we bored the block to ..060 over ,bigger valved heads small block chevy valve springs, and an edelbrock cam #3790 I need the initial base timing. the engine has never been just right because I have no idea where to start with in ref to the timing I have ran the gautlet from 6 btdc to 14 does anyone have any recommendations. I am installing a stock intake that I have ported and smoothed I also welded shut the heat riser cross over. I am going to be installing a new reman carb. would really like this to run well. any help much appriciated. love the site so far wish I had found it earlier.

the factory sets it at 10 degress BTDC. I don't want to sound like an ass but it would be a good idea to get rid of that computer controlled carb. They have allways had problems new or old.

it's not computer controlled, what about ?????

thanks but it's not computer controlled it's and 83 pre-computer it has the rochester2g which is still a piece of junk. I just have not been able to find a good used webber to put on it. anybody know where I could find a used webber or something comparable ? now I know stock is 10 btdc but is it different for the edelbrock cam? can't seam to dial it in, also I pute really light springs on the dist. would that hurt me or help me?

edel makes a good 4 barrel intake for it. but to do it right you have to cut the floor off of it and make the runners equal sized from one bank to the other, then I ran a edel carb 600cfm. I also had a radical cam, if i remeber right about 570 lift. She launched like I had a v-8 in her. That was years ago, I don't remeber alot of the details, but i remeber the intake and carb.
sigpicHow to make High performance Emissions:
A "true" High flow converter, straight pipe.
Low/No flow EGR valve, block off plate.
Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

Weber carbs are nice. People who have them really like them. But they are pricey. A good 350 to 390 CFM 2bbl carb should work well. Holleys are easy to tune so you might want to try that. The Rochester 2SE Carb that comes stock on the S-10's is basically a Rochester spreadbore cut down the middle. You either love them or hate them. But when they are tuned right the drivability cannot be beat.

I am not sure what you compression is but I will assume it is stock. With a slightly hotter cam than stock I would start at 12* BTDC and then go from there. You will probably want between 32* to 36* of total timing all in by 2000RPM.

after my last post I set the timing to 12* installed a reman stock carb that found in our local u pull it yard.( which had not been run at all I mean it was new, no dirt no fuel to it) after playing with my vacuem gage and and air fuel mix it seams to running pretty good still hesitates a little when I first take off but pulls hard after that, I'm a little pissed I didn't try this carb a year ago when I found it. think I will try playing with the timing a little to see if I can get rid of the hesitation Side note: I am running light weight springs on the dist. seams to bring in the timing faster this is good yes or no? not sure how to tell total timing, I think I need a different timing light... please keep your ideas coming.

To tell total timing you will need an adjustable timing light. Hesitation points to the accelerator pump or possibly timing.

My 83 Camaro had a 2bbl verajet that had about 6 or sensor in the carb and an ecu.

A California Emissions vehicle may have had a Computer for the Carb. I know on the S-10's it started in 85 for California trucks. Federal emission trucks had the regular 2SE carb

if your carb dose not have a vac advance it was/is controlled by a computer, or what was considered a computer at the time. It seems to steal more power than anything, but at the time it was to "clean" up for the sniffer. The non vac advance dist flattens the power band in the wrong way.... you end up with a lack of power when a load is on it. here is the best one I have found for the 660. its about 2 bills but will make you shake your head when you find out what all was being left on the table! good luck

Well that pic and the one on the Proform site shows a Coil In Cap distributor. I don't think that will work for RWD guys.
