  • Cam suggestoins please

figured while im doing all this work with the whole head swap deal i might as well get a better cam. i read this chart once someone told me to read and it said something about 260 if im thinking right before the car is too much a pain to drivce on the road. could someone straighten me out? also any other things ill have to take into consideration would be nice. oh and what about roller rockers, idk. i got a million things going through my head about this.

Engine information would be helpful... Have no idea what engine you are wanting to put a cam in!

oh lol. wow i feel kinda dumb...yeah its the 3.1 mpfi in an 89 gp. the miles are relatively low so i figured this is all worth doing. otherwise i would just run it into the ground. the heads being swapped onto it would be the large port 3100 heads of i think its 2000. hten there was some off of wot-tech like the roller rockers and all that fancy jazz. just trying to get a nicer set up here.

the 260, either Comp Cams or Crane Cams, is a good streetable cam. although, with the crane 272 will make great power with those heads, and will give you a nice lopy idle.

just dont go with to big of a cam or it will send the computer into a seizure. i went with an ari phase 2 cam in my 2.8. noticeable power, no problems, and you can hear it a little bit

if you go with any bigger cam you need to tune it. with OBDII, the ECM will adjust for the cam. it still needs to be tuned, but it will be able to adjust up to a point. OBDI won't adjust. the ECM will be tuned on the rich side from the factory, so there is some room for minor air flow increases, but for a bigger cam, it will be dangerously lean. I'm referring to WOT only.
Otherwise, if you stay out of PE mode, even the OBDI will adjust for the bigger cam. As always, it's beneficial to tune either way.

You can run a 260 cam on a stock 89 ECM and chip. Tuned is better but there is nothing dangerous about it.

now that i think about it, paintballin82 had a 272 in a 3.1 with P & P heads with headers. he had a hypertech "custom" chip made for it. they just added about 4 degrees at WOT, and the car ran great.

Ben, many years ago, I could have sworn you told me what i wrote above. though, we all have learned so much since then as to what really happens.

alright cool thanks. also i know you have to get custom length pushrods but how do i measure for them? anything special? i dont know if there is anything else to take into account...oh and for a big cam your saying the computer will be sent into a seizure, but it shold be fine as long as maybe gotta custom made chip right?

yes a custom chip will help. it doesn't matter obd1 or 2, they will both adjust to the same degree, but it won't be ideal. when going WOT, i know a OBD1 setup takes the current BLM and applies it to the enrichment for going WOT. meaning if it was running lean before getting all the way into the gas, it compensates for it, but in no way is it the right way to do it. i'm sure obd2 is similar.
