  • Ported a set of 3100 Heads. Need help with 3400 L&UIM s

Well, its been like a freakin year and a half. Jeremey had sent me a set of good condition 3100 heads. I believe they are from 96-98. They go on a grand am.

I've gotten em ported up nice, using the 3100 intake gaskets for the matching.

However, he had sent me a set of 3400 Lower and upper intake manifolds. At first all I had were the 3100 intake gaskets, and it just didn't seem like it wanted to sit right. They will PROBABLY fit, but they would have to be port matched SEVERLY.

So he sent me a set of 3400 complete gasket kit heads and up.

    So I checked the 3100 heads, with the 3400 intake gasket. The gasket do not come close to working... Obviously they work great on the 3400 Manifolds :}

So, I've been told these 3400 lower and upper intake manifold swaps on to 3100s are a breeze.

    Which gaskets do I use???

3100 intake manifold gaskets, or 3400 gaskets. The 3400 gaskets don't seem to work in any way on the 3100 heads... And the 3100 Intake gaskets seem to be real sketchy on the 3400 lower intake manifold.

Helpeth me outeth :] I wanna get these parts to him out by the end of the week at the latest.

damn you beat me to the post

The Heads are off a low millage 96 3100 grand am, and the Intake manifolds are off a 99 3400, GA.

These peaces are going on a 3400, to be purchased later.

Jeremy, are you gonna go NA with these? Or are you gonna do forced induction? I was more agressive on the intake porting than I was on the exhaust side. That will be good for, Turbocharging. With turboing you want a bias on the intake side.

But you will also want do either do rocker ratios, or a different cam to take advantage of these heads.

If you put turbo cams on these heads, before you turbo it though, expect to see even a loss of performance over stock, because turbo cams do NOT work with NA. Even with cam specs close to stock cams.

            Going N/A is the plan.

Your gonna cam right? High lift, lots of overlap, and some nice duration = good for NA ;] NOW< will somone Chime in with the gasket info?

Come ON ANYONE! I know you people done this before

After much searching I found this.

you might run into gasket matching problems with this.
the 3100 intake gaskets are different from teh 3400 intake gaskets. as on the heads the locating notch/tab that pushes into the 3100 head for the gasket is on one side of the 3100 #3 and #5 ports and on the 3400 its on the oposite side of the same ports.

ive used 3400 intake gaskets on my 3100 heads(ported to match) i just put a dab of silicone to hold the gasket in place because the locating tab doesnt work.

3400 top end and the 00+ 3100 parts are better at flowing than the older -99 parts. however teh 3400 heads do have the larger 1.76 intake valves. (1.72 stock)

as to who sells a kit? no one. just go to a local wrecker and find the parts. or check ebay, pieces get sold for fairly cheap most times.

GM does have decent prices on the intake manifolds if you get them through gm parts direct.

If beau can get an image up of what he's got to work with we can prove what year the stuff is from.

Also we need to know if there are any problems bolting the supplyed 3100 heads to a LA1 block

The heads will bolt to the block no problem. Hell, you can take a set of iron heads from 82 and bolt them to a 00 block if you wanted.

You cant bolt stuff yeah. But Im not gonna give him a product where hes gluing gaskets, and attempting to match them on to the 3100 heads. They dont even come close, the gaskets would need to be cut, and the ports themselves arent even close to being matched. It would be safer, and easier to port match the 3100 gasket to the 3400 manifold, than it would be to port match the head. I don't want to break into a water jacket after a year and a half of having this guys heads.

Beau, If I have to glue the gaskets to make it work then thats fine, not a problem.
How many millimeters differance is "don't even come close"?

well to be honest with you, I'll do whatever you want. if you want me to port the 3.4 gaskets on the heads I'll do it. But to be honest, who knows if it'll break into the water jackets, and it will SIGNIFICANTLY increase the port volume, and velocity will drop, effectivly making them FI heads. I'd prefer to port match the lower intake manifold first. Its up to you though buddy.

P.S. your TB looks nice! ;]
