  • Question about changing a cam

I currently have a 3.4 SFI engine with a Schenider Racing cam (I don't remember the specs right now, but it's close to stock). The cam does not have a lobe for the cam sensor, so I am thinking this is making my jeep run very rich. I am not getting great gas mileage, my tail pipe is black, and I am have hesitation above 50% throttle. So I am thinking about switching to a cam that has a lobe for the cam sensor so the SFI will be effective. This is the cam I am thinking about switching to. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku

Now my question is will I need new lifters with the cam? I am save a bunch of money by re using my Comp lifters that only have about 2K miles on them. I need to know if this would be a good option since they are close to new or if I would need to go with a new set of lifters as well. Everything else is stock except that I have GM performance Valve springs as well.

    Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Well it is never a good idea to re-use lifters, however with that little mileage you will likely be OK.

It's been done with alot more mileage than that without major problems.

Having said that, I'm not 100% sure that is your problem.

I am having trouble finding anyone that is running a cam with no sensor lobe in the 3.4 with the stock ECU. So I am not sure how rich it would run with out the SFI working?? If you know of anyone that is doing this please let me know. Thanks.

Are you sure that cam even has a cam sensor provision? You should call COMP and see.

As for the lifters NO you cannot reuse them. Once they are broken in they are stuck with that cam and that lobe for life.

No I am not sure of it but I would call Comp before I order it. I am only going off the sticky on FullThrottlev6.

Other than replacing the lifters is there anything else that needs to be replaced or should be replaced if I do swap the cam?

If you have the GM Performance parts springs (which I assume are the ones from the crate motor) than your all set to go. Just make sure you have Moly lube, break in concentrate (2 bottles), 2 filters and enough oil for 2 oil changes.

You should break in the cam with new CONVENTIONAL oil, moly lube on all the lobes and lifter feet and break in concentrate poured in with the oil. After 20 mins to 30 mins at 2000 to 2500 rpm shut off the engine and change the oil and filter plus add a bottle of break in lube as well. Then your good to go and are back to regular intervals.
