  • 3.1 RWD

Hey, I m new here and just bought a 87 S10 with a bad 2.8 and bought a 3.1 to replace it. Have the motor torn down to freshen it up some,it's all within specs but I have a few questions since GMs is new to me,what type rings were used, moly or cast, what gasket sets are of better quality Victor or Fel-Pro?

I've ported heads has a hobbyist with knowledge from a friend who's been porting for some thirty years,so that's the stage I'm at now trans forming the intake short-side to a higher velocity profile rather than tapping for increased CFMs,don't know if it'll work but I have nothing to loose with these poorly designed ports. Since I'll be using the 2.8 intake and TB should I be concerned with incorrect fuel ratio's? Later down the road I'd like to switch over to the TB from a 4.3 and was wondering if this mod is worth looking into and what corrections are needed for accurate F/A's(injector sizes OR computer adjustments) and when you open up the thyrottle bores of the 2.8 intake, would it be a good idea to venturi the bore for enhanced throttle response and air velocity cuz of the small displacement of the 3.1?

You can get a 3.1L ECM from a Lumina APV Van, Pontiac Transport, or Isuzu Rodeo. They will all run your 3.1L without any guess work. Just use the injectors you have now if they are in good shape. I am currently using a Rodeo 3.1L ECM to run my Trooper's 3.2L and it works great.

Stock rings were cast. No fancy stuff. I used all Fel Pro gaskets and they work great. They pretty much set the industry standard.

Boring out the intake is always a good idea. I never added anything special to the bores. Doubt it would improve things much. But if you can do it easily go for it. If its done properly I cant see any losses.

Can also use an ECM from a 3.1 F-body.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance but I'm new to GM,would the F-body be front wheel drive and ecm would need to be from TBI engine not MPI

F-body is the Camaro and Firebird, so RWD.

Agreed the F-body ECM is wrong. You need one from a TBI vehicle.

Ah. Reread the post and realized now he's keeping the TBI, for some reason I was thinking full 3.1 MPFI
