  • 2.8 pistons in 3.1

    Has anyone used the 2.8 flat top pistons in a 3.1. I have a 3.1 and wish to increase compression and otherwise I would need custom pistons. I know the 2.8 pistons will need to be cut down...is there enough thickness?

    In my "engine rebuild" thread there was discussion about this process. It can be done. How much compression are you looking for? Is this an iron head or aluminum head motor?

      pistons 2.8 to 3.1

      I have also read the discussion, but as far as I could tell no one has acually used the 2.8 pistons.. there is an issue about if there is enough thickness in top of piston to adj deck (2.8 pistons would be taller).

      I'm looking for neiborhood of 11:1 compression and I also know that I would need to adj chamber vol for this compression. I'm just trying to avoid having custom pistons made.

      This engine is for a 1200 lbs sports racer..
      I have two engines and I do not wish to buy any others. One engine is a 3.4, the other is a late 3.1. I can use the 3.4 with the 3.1 al heads. With this combination I would have to use the Gen 2 cam with the flat tappets. If I use the 3.1 engine I need to increase the compression so I would have to use other pistons. If I do this engine I can use the roller cam.

      So do I use a larger displacement engine with the flat tappet cam or do I use a smaller displacement engine with a roller cam (likely more available cam choices).
      With either engine I am looking for high rpm not low end torque.

        if u look in his thread again i posted all the measurements of how thick the pistion is before cutting and after for each desired cr.

        i even have the picton i cut in half sitting nexto me ill snap some pics in a lil bit for u so u can see
