  • Piston Questions

Im rebuilding a 3100 for my wifes 99 malibu im not looking to make a huge power manster but a bump in power would be nice. Dont really need forged pistons but a bump in compression wouldnt hurt. I guess I just want to know were you guys a getting your pistons and what you recommend for a mild motor.
    Thanks Jake

I forgot to mention that this is a 2001 motor so it has the big valve heads.

Anything other than stock replacements will be custom. I'd look into other items, like heads and exhaust, before I'd look into pistons. You can use some older 3.1 pistons, but you would be looking at much higher CR, which would require tuning in order to run decent on pump gas.

I agree with bszopi 100%. Going high compression is going to require more than sounds like you want.GO to your local yard, get a 3400 t.b,put a good exhaust, and get a good tune on your computer, that will be plenty, with a low amount of effort. My 1996 ciera already has a 56mm tb on it, unlike most 3100's,because it is one piece with the mass air, but anyway,I put on high flow exhaust,U.D pullyw/ac delete, and high flow air filter and went from 17.2@78mph in the quarter,to15.9@85.2mph.So my point is, 3100's have extra power stockin them, and you have the best heads and intakes going for you, so you might have better results than me.sorry so long ,i am new at this!
