  • Wiring for 3500 swap.

    Where do I start here? the engine will be going into an 85 fiero. Should I use the existing harness and wiring and modify to fit and use a 7730 ecm and convert to dis, or use a newer obd-II ecm and harness from a malibu or like vehicle. I would like whatever will be the best programming option for cheap. Not real clear on the details of doing a dis conversion, and having trouble coming up details there so any help or links would be awesome. I also will hopefully be swaping in a transmission as well. I was thinking 4t65e, so I guess that will need to be controlled some how, and since the current tranny is not electronic what is needed to operate an "E" tranny, the 7730 ecm should control a tranny like that right? will there need to be modifications to it? am I better of just going with an older tranny like a 4t60e?

    Any help is much appreciated,
    Chris

    I'd use either the existing harness or one form a FWD Cavalier or Beretta. My 91 cavalier still has the original harness and '7730 running a 3500 (tuned of course).
    Past Builds;
    1991 Z24, 3500/5 Spd. 275WHP/259WTQ 13.07@108 MPH
    1989 Camaro RS, ITB-3500/700R4. 263WHP/263WTQ 13.52@99.2 MPH
    Current Project;
    1972 Nova 12.73@105.7 MPH

      The '7730 will not run a E tranny.

      There is an OBD1 ECM that might be able to be used to control the tranny, I'll have to find the number, but it comes from the '93 to '95 full size GM pick ups. It is originally used in a TBI application but could likely be used on an MPFI set-up, though I'm not sure it's been done, and would be new teritory to be covered. It could also likely be used to just run the tranny, but again, uncharted territory.

      I would, if it were me, well I would run a manual tranny, but if I had to run an auto and keep it simple I would likely run the TH125/3T40, built of course.

      Converting to DIS is pretty simple. The '7730 will run it no problem (with proper code), the connections to the ECM and ICM are pretty simple. There will need to be an external crank trigger used, since the 3500 crank trigger is not compatible with the older DIS like the one used on the genII and earlier genIII 660.

        yea, from what i've read the 94 and 95 full size trucks, s-10's and vans have electric transmissions. I know the 94 s-10 does for sure. Here are the ecm's 16156930, 16196395, 16197427. The s-10 I saw had the 16197427 with the 4L60 e-trans. Uses OD code.
