  • Mods without tuning.

So like I was saying in my Gen 3 2.8 thread I got a new car, a 2001 Grand Am GT Coupe. It looks like I'm going to be left with a few extra parts from another build so i was wondering if anyone has any experience with there parts and no computer tuning.

    Parts List:
    FDP 62MM TB
    Match Ported 3400 UIM
    3400 Phenolic Spacers
    FFP UDP
    CAI

So my biggest concern is the TB. I don't really want to get into tuning with this car. Will I see good gains and maybe the same or better fuel economy or do I just sell of the part if I'm not gonna tune?? I'm only considering because I already have these parts.

In the future if the exhaust needs changing I'll do a nice mandrel bent setup but I'm not going spend money just cause I can. I already have my Z24 for that. I'll probably look into the 2005 Impala manifolds too.

    Thanks..

you'll be fine w/o tuning. It's when you get into cam swapping and headwork that the VE tables need to be adjusted. The computer will compensate for smaller mods like you listed.

Of course a good tune will take you further since even the stock tune isn't perfect.

I know a guy in the area with a Modded GTP and I believe he has a tuner so I might be able to get access to that.

For the fun of it anyone want to hazard a guess at the power level I'd be at with the above listed mods and tuning?? I'd be happy with 225 Crank HP
LOL I really shouldn't be doing this to my DD but I can't resist..

I don't really know anything about these trannys, will they hold up to an upped power leve or am I asking for trouble?? I drive like a granny most of the time in my DD.

No way you are going to going 50hp with what you have listed. I would venture to guess closer to 15hp, 20hp tops, which would put you just shy of 200hp.

200 HP crank if your lucky.

The trans will hold up if you keep driving like a granny. But then, when you up the power levels, no one really wants to drive like that.

UDP won't require any tuning, it's just less work the motor has to do. It doesn't change the fuel/air intake or exhaust so that won't matter. CAI isn't going to matter, not that huge of a change in breathing..

Yeah 10-15 tops probably. Not gonna mess up your tune, but like others said if you want to get the most power, even a stock car can benefit from a tune. My car has more mods and runs fine, and is quicker. Of course I have a lot more changes from stock than what you are talking about. But if I could tune my OBD1."5" I sure would as I'd get even more power from my mods.

Even with what I have on my motor, its only about 210 i think Ben said, and thats with a bigger cam. And Although it runs good right now, I need to swap to OBDII to get it tuned.
