  • 3.4l power estimate?

i am gonna build a 3.4l all the stock internals (for now). a 2.8l camaro intake crane flat tappet cam 216/222 @.05 and .47/.480 lift (not usre if this is exactly right...) pacesetter headers, 2.5" dynomax super turbo cat back no cat full MSD ignition (cap rotor, wires, coil etc.) mildly ported iron heads (for now... soon full 3500 top end swap...) with roler tip rockers, no ac no power steering... going into a 86 camaro hat already weighs around 3200 pounds... but gonna try to get her under 3000 down the road... so what do you think it will make? im hoping for at least 215...

215 is a longshot. someone has way more mods than you are talking about and only came up with 160 at the wheels, N/A

there is absolutely no way you will get 215 out of that (not trying to be a jerk, but i dont want to get his hopes up)-the most you are going to see will be 190 or 195 MAX (thats granting 15-20hp for the cam, 5-10 for the header & 5 for the exhaust. i would count on a safe 180-potential 190 or so-but dont dream above there for right now without more mods.

wow... the heads that bad? well what about when i get the street performance 3500 heads and intake? with all that and flat top pistons, with water/meth injection for the compression...

if i remember corectly a stock 3.4 is rated at 160 so with a cam, headers, and some port work you could gain anywhere from20-30 hp to give you 180-190.
but i doubt you will see any more then that

yea the stock heads -are- that bad (from a performance perspective). im not sure what kind of gains youd get from the 3500 top end & the rest but id say around 215 would be a reasonable estimate

I'd say 120 to the wheels if you use the iron top end.

start off right, Crane H260-2 cam with a full 3500 top end, headers, 65mm TB and of course tuning. If you leave in the stock 3.4 pistons you'll have over 11:1 scr and will probably see around 180-200 at the wheels depending on the trans type.

sell the iron heads to the scrap yard.

well, the 3500 top end will have to wait... a lot of money to spend for just 200 to the wheels... is that with a stock 3500 top end or with a fully ported 3500 top end? and is there any way i could fit retrofit hyd. roller lifters in the 3.4l?

is this with stock 3500 heads and intake? or with a ported one, i may be able to get some heads for cheap, 200 to the wheels sounds intruiging, i think i would go pretty quick, with that, trans would be a fresh t5, with a spec clutch and the aluminium pressure plate, and an lt1 positraction rear... pretty quick i think it will be.

that would be with a stock 3500 top end.

tuning will be very important though

fantastic! i may be able to find a top end for a very good price... you think it will go over 285 pounds of torque at the flywheel? i wont have money to get a new trans yet.. how did you get 275 WHP out of your cavalier? and how much does it weigh?

it's about 2800 lbs with me in it. Should be in the high 12's this year if I can get traction.

I'm just under 300 TQ and 320 HP @ the crank but i'm running a pretty wild cam, It's daily driveable but not the most fun thing to cruse around town in. What trans do you have? 700R4 or a T5?

you can use the 2.8 headers but you'll have to elongate the bolt holes a little to fit the slightly different bolt spacing of the aluminium heads.

i have a t5 NWC... which is why i would be hesitant to try and pas 285 pounds... but if it breaks... that is a good thing i gues haha. my car now weighs about 3000 pounds... i have nothing in it... no ac manual windows etc... plus i intend to shave about 200 pounds off with a crhome-moly tubular front end and a manual rack and pinion and a couple other things... so maybe lucky if i get low 14s... still not bad if its reaonably priced!

If you don't launch it hard and slam the gears around the T5 should take more than it's rated for. They are well known for problems though.

It's been a while but i remember reading about someone adapting a T56 to a T5 bellhousing.. that could be fun
