  • Need help picking out cam

I recently swapped in a cammed 3400 ( 1211 grind ) into my 94 olds. its currently running on OBD1.5. Im planning on swapping to OBDII very soon ( before spring time ) and getting this motor tuned for now.

My future plans include headers, head work ( probably street/strip ) I duno about rasing compression. I dont wanna mill the heads too much, probably .010 max, so then would I have to run thinner head gaskets to bump up the compression? if I did raise it, I think the most id wanna go is 10.5:1, MAYBE 11:1 if its possible without getting pistons for it. bigger cam and everything to support it. My question is, what cam should I go with before i run into issues with the stock converter/tranny. I was looking at 1357 or 1280 grinds, but wanted to get some peoples opinions on what they think would be good for making great power, but also keep it somewhat streetable. I wanna keep the redline around 6000-6500RPM.

    Also, 3400 or 3500 heads?

Any imput would be great. I wanna keep this an N/A car ( since i dont know much about boosting, and would rather not get into it for all honesty )

    Thanks

you know i got the 1357 grind and its streetable no problems driving around town even with stop and go traffic.

cant really compare tranny's with you since i have the 4t45 but i kinda had it in the plans to build one up anyway so.

it ran pretty decent on the mostly stock tune minus the change for the larger injectors. i didnt want to start tuning since it was already fall and the temps were fairly cool and the tune would have went to shit when i started in the spring, plus im gonna tear the top half down and put the 3500 top end on it.

3500 top end is an easy way to gain some hp for a not so major upgrade.

your gonna want to get a 65mm throttle body again.

heres a few videos of my setup.
heres the last video i took of the exhaust with the flowmaster 80 before i put the "quiet" muffler on.

If you can bear to wait a couple months (I hope it's just a couple months....) I can provide a sound clip and some limited thoughts on a 1280 cam grind.
      3400 bored .040" over, street/strip 3400 heads (milled .020"), and headers with a 3.42 geared 4T45-E. About 10.1:1 compression. I figure about 6300rpm shift points.
To get the compression up with 3500 heads, you'll likely have to change pistons.

I got the 1357 cam with 114 lsa. I hope to get it running by 2012. 1280 cam is also a great choice. Probably your overall best bet.

Do you have any video of your car with the 1211 cam and obd1.5? I would love to have an example of this setup to show others on the site.

Currently no, but I can probably get one up soon for you.
