  • 3100 build options

Hi everyone. I have a 2000 Malibu and I've been looking into building it to be quicker (nothing as drastic like I've seen for power builds - amazing as they are). So far, I've added a CAI and replaced the stock TB with a 56 off of a 3400. I'm hoping to be able to build it upwards of 220HP (not expecting that at the wheels) without having to do a cam or headwork (planning those for later, but until I get the cash and the time I'm trying to find other options). Searching around I've noticed a catback exhaust, downpipe, tuned PCM and UIM/LIM port and polish will help - I would just appreciate some opinions on how far that would get me and how much further I'd need to go to reach my goal.

I'm also looking into suspension work to keep everything under control. Would the rear disk brake conversion, struts/springs and strut tower bars be good enough or should I look into sway bars (if so, both or just front/back and how it'll affect it woulld be appreciated)?

    Thanks for the guidance.

I hate to say it but, 220 crank hp is going to take some head and cam work. I'm in the planning stages of my NA 3400 buildup and I'm looking at 3500 peads, UIM, LIM custom cam and 65mm TB for 250hp, 270ftlbs. With the smaller bore you've got it's going to be even harder to build power, not that substantially, but harder. for 220hp, off the top of my head, you're gonna need a WOT stage 2 cam, UIM, LIM, 62mmTB, headers and a fairly agressive PMC tune, should get you there, but you may need head work too, unfortunately you don't want to use 3400 or 3500 heads because you'll loose way too much compression due to the lack of bore. If you were going all out turbo or SC you might be able to pull off the 3500 heads as they'll give you a great quench area, so long as the valves don't hit, which I don't know one way or the other.

Try doing your performance ideas they sound like a good start and if its not enough then put a cam in it. It sounds like you just want to get a little more performance out of it. BTW some 99 and all 00 3100 use the same heads as the 3400. If your thinking about going to a 3500 head I would suggest swaping in a 3400 bottom end to.

If I did the CAI, TB, Exhaust, headers and UIM/LIM then that should all be able to go onto a 3400 if I choose to switch to that (plus a cam and heads for the 3400) right?

I'd be planning the 3400 plus cam and heads for later (that way I can get the work done and still have my daily driver going - helps with the time issue), but how far do you guys think everything else would get the 3100 until then?
