getting ready to start rebuilding my engine after it sat for over 5 years and i have a couple of questions for some of you more seasoned members. i am not looking to put a lot of money into this build so for the most part it will remain stock. i might have the engine balanced but other than that and maybe a cam nothing drastic only looking to get around 200 WHP with a manual trans.

    head gaskets?
i have read that gm made some changes made to the factory head gaskets over the years. are there any particular ones that you would use or are the $40 felpro ones the gaskets of choice for the heads.

    debur crank rods?
i know that usually when you do this it is a good idea to have the whole rotating Assembly balanced, but if done in moderation is it really necessary?

also, i am looking at doing a port and polish, nothing major just clean up the ports and smooth everything out. is there any particular area i should pay attention to? i noticed during the tare down process that the ports all matched up with the factory gaskets pretty well.

Are you putting new pistons into it? If so you need a balance so de burr the rods as much as you need to. Other wise just leave them because they wont fail they are very strong rods.

Gasket matching is a good idea its always worth the effort especially on aluminum since it cuts so fast.
