  • A Stalker Powerplant

    Hi all,

I've been reading much of the *awesome* tech info here and thought I'd query some thoughts on a plan ...

First off, I'm going to build up a Stalker V6 ... but not actually start that build for at least a year (gotta move a shop, sell a house, build a house, etc).

In the meantime tho I figa I can start the collection of bits for the eventual build (e.g. build a motor, build a rear+LSD, etc).

    So enough background ...

    #1: Peoples Republik of Kalifornia
We will be moving to CA, and I will try to get an sb100 exemption, but don't want to have to rely upon that in this buildup.
So, my thought is to get a '93-'95 Camaro 3.4, retain the SFI + emissions crap (and the headaches involved), and then use that powerplant to pass the BAR. From my research the donor engine used in a SPCNS determines the emissions requirements as "model year or configuration of the engine installed" ... (including looking up the block number, so no crate 3.4).

#2: Get about 200hp (given the above)
From what I gather, getting 3400 heads w/IM can still be made to resemble "stock" (aka retain the emissions, SFI, ECM, etc) but get a nice power punch. I understand that means pistons as well, but the donor 3.4 will get a rebuild anyways (just using the block to set requirements for the BAR).

So, I'm hoping to start hitting pik-a-parts, or finding a runner camaro, and general shopping for bits.
I can build a motor, and probably the rearend, this winter ... then after relocating, I could start the kit build.

Does this sound like a reasonable shopping list?
    1) Donor camaro 3.4 ... (must have harness, ECM, SFI, etc)
    2) pull a 3400 topend someplace ... (will need to work tho with the above to pass BAR)
    3) put it all together ... (new pistons, cam+springs, etc)

    Thoughts?
Should I perhaps just get a runner 3.4 camaro, do the engine, drop it back in then pass BAR?
Any suggestions on what you might do (e.g. 3400 top vs 3500 top)
New cam, or not? Would that eliminate any chance of passing the BAR? I'll rebuild (and p/p) the heads, so springs fa sure.

I'm still reading/searching, and would appreciate suggestions ...

    Thx

    Rob

    P.S. I'm also an ex-fiero owner (did an I4 to V6 swap, etc) ... I'm a big 660 fan!
Working...
