  • Muffler installed

Hey guys, I just got the Hooker Aerochamber installed with 2.5" piping from the cat back. I went with a Magnaflow dual rolled tip. It looks nice, like it belongs there but not too flashy. Anyway, it ended up being A LOT louder than I thought it would be. That's not a bad thing though. I did notice some improvement while accelerating, it seems to wind out harder and not "lose steam as quickly." Any ideas as to what kind of gain I may have gotten?

The only downside that it has is that there is a drone at certain points of throttle, but oh well, you can't have it all. Other than that it sounds pretty nice and I'm sure the 3400 UIM/LIM swap will benefit even better from this mod. Then comes the cam at tax season....

Btw... pics will come soon. I don't have my camera with me at the moment.

A new downpipe and cat would help too. If your downpipe is like other 3100's, it's 1.5" ID dual walled...

It most likely is. I have to find a local performance shop that is willing to take the time to work on it. Too bad no one makes aftermarket ones or headers for the 60*.

Agreed. Someone i know put a 2.5'' DP on a near stock L82 grand prix. And it seemed to help out almost as much as my intakes did.

If you don't have a section of pipe after the muffler going to the tips, it will have more drone that if you did. when I had my tips rust off (used cheap pipe of course to them) then the muffler droned really bad with no pipe/tip on it.

You may want to think about changing the rear manifold to the center dump style, I think it has a larger outlet than the a-body offset outlet manifold.

                PM sent...

Anywho, does anybody have any ideas on how to deaden the sound a bit on the inside in general. I like it loud but I have two little ones and I don't want to hurt their ears.

That downpipe won' fit your car, or the flange on it.

Thanks for the heads up man. I'm not going to go that route right now anyway. I'm looking for the UIM & LIM (finally)

Anyway, a friend of mine told me that some sound deadening material under the trunk mat and behind the rear seat might help with the loudness. Is this true?

Possibly, if the trunk is acting like a drum and vibrating due to the sound.

How long is the pipe that goes to the tips?

Aerochambers are designed not to drone.. kinda strange.

Normally i have 2 layers of sound deadning carpet padding under my trunk carpet, plus with my back seat folded up mine isn't loud at all.. currently i have no interior.. just a drivers seat and yes, it is loud

Maybe some good automotive padding or some spray in sound deadener would help..

I believe the tip is connected directly to the muffler.

I think this may be the problem. Yesterday I lifted up the trunk carpet and there is some very cheap deadening material on the passenger side but absolutely NONE on the drivers side whatsoever or on the back of the rear seats. It's just the sheet metal on the trunk floor and springs on the seat. The thing that really makes me think it's the trunk is that it seems to sound okay on the outside but gets louder on the inside.

Is there a type of deadening material that you guys would recommend? I was planning on just doing what you did Dave and laying down a layer or two. I'm not gonna bother gluing it in case I ever want to take it out.

If there was some pipe length to the tips it would help drone I bet.
