  • 3.4L RWD engine rebuild for supercharger

Does anybody know/recommend any engine builders with experience with the 60deg engine family? After almost 10 years, my stock 3.4L camaro short block finally failed (Probably had nothing to do with the fact that I was trying to step up the tune...) Engine was pulling hard, almost 12psi, then pop. I am running a B&M Supercharger with about 6 PSI on the street and 9psi at the track, ran the 12 PSI pulley setup exactly ONCE, oops. See photo look at piston #6 on the top left of the piston.

Anyway, I know that just about any piston company CAN make me forged pistons, and any good engine shop CAN build the engine, I am just looking for somebody that has some experience with this engine. Around here if its not a V8 or a Honda they just kinda look at ya strange....

    thanks in advance - Andy

I am located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but have a US shipping address for business, so it's no problem getting something shipped across the border. I am willing to eat the core and just get a new(to me) short block built and shipped. The most promising candidate to do the rebuild is www.gmv6.com aka A.R.I. Racing Engines.

Anybody hear of them use them?

        Cool!

I have a 3.4L in my MGB and my 1982 S10 long box. Lots of companies can do this but its best to find one local... Like bszopi says- where are you located?

Also, what manifold are you running? I have the L32 stock SFI setup in all of my cars/pickups and have had great results but am considering remote turbo in the distant future- lower boost, but just a hair more power down the road. Never going to beat my brothers Porsche 924 (LS1 powered!)

Hey BMC, I am afraid I am one of those dinosaurs (yet somehow I am only 33) who is still running a carb. My Supercharger is a roots style made by B&M (though not anymore, what S/C stuff they still made got sold to Holley a few years ago) specifically for the 2.8L. My engine is a L32 short block with LL2 heads. The intake manifold came with the S/C. I tried TBI, but found a 2305 series Holley (progressive linkage) 500cfm 2bbl that just works AWESOME. I can drive around on just the front bbl at part throttle and get good mileage and throttle response without sacrificing any of the top end power when I stand on it.

I usually do buy local, but if I can find a specialist, all the better.

some of the guys on the Jbody forum were discussing a group buy on forged pistons for the 3400 which is the same bore and uses the same rods as your 3.4. You'd have to get yours with a smaller dish volume since your heads have a much larger combustion chamber than the 3400 does though..

Thanks SuperDave, I will look into it, I actually want to drop the static compression ratio so the extra dish volume might work out.... Andy

or switch to the better FWD heads

Something tells me the cost of fabricating a lower intake to mount my supercharger would make this a very expensive mod in terms of dollar/hp. - And I'm pretty sure I would need new headers too.....

How much better do they flow anyway?

EFI and ECM engine management really comes into its own on positive pressure mods.

You might want to consider using FI whether you stick with supercharging or go turbo.

With a knock detector, you can run 12 psi all day long without trashing the engine as it will simply cut out if it detects any knock.

I used Ross Racing for some nice forged pistons for my 3.2 turbo.
