Ok so i have a few questions that were really not answered in the 20+ pages of mind numbing fun on the sticky...or at least i didnt catch it if they did. First off, the crank sends a different signal to the computer...from the cam sensor in the block right? or am i wrong? also i remember something about the cam sensor being different or what is the dl on that...also im going to swap my front cover over so i dont have to worry about the cam sensor...umm the coolant sensor will be taken care of, what do i really need to do to make this run with my stock computer? I have 2 diff tuning platforms, DHP and HPT. i can just re use the perf stuff from my 3400 rebuild, minus the pistons of course...ill just get some other ones...also i might look at having the block machined for more oil squirters...and ill be using a 3400 upper to keep things on the dl for anyone looking at it. i am going to run higher compression on it...somewhere in the 10 zone. itll be my project engine, so itll go kind of slowly. Is there anything that i am missing? oh yah is all the mounting the same for the accessories from the 3400-3500 when i use my old timing cover?

It's already 9.8:1 compression...
Cam sensor has different connector, splice it on, or use an older cam sensor
The crank sensor in the block is different, you need the WOT external setup.
Old timing cover accesorries yes other than AC bottom bolt in the pan is a little off. some drilling offseting the bracket I think is what some are doing to make it bolt up, or just leaving the bottom bolt out.
trans to engien bracket needs modifying.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

what trans to engine bracket??? you mean the one on the oil pan to the pass side of the trans? and mine doent have a bracket for the a/c it only has like 3 bolts...the top has a small alum spacer and a long bolt on the bottom...and i would need the crank trigger to put on my crank pulley to keep the signal that would originally come from inside the engine off the crank throw? is that why it is needed?
i would just use my old cam sensor...Last edited by gectek; 08-22-2008, 07:25 PM.

The bracket that goes between the trans and the engine.. I can't see it on my car cause i've never pulled the engine/trans.... but it's in the sticky thread..
The bracket I meant the spacer on the AC... Since the bottom 3rd bolt in the pan is offset by a little on the 3500 (and you can't swap to any other pan) you can drill down the aluminum in the spacer and in the compressor to lower it or raise it (whatver it is) to get the bottom bolt to line up. Or just ues the 2 top and put some thin rubber between the bottom or you'll get a little ticking from it moving.
The malibu ECM will be a PITA...... just get a tuner, either one, and copy over the spark tables, fuel tables, etc from the malibu to your PCM... easy as that. The malibu ECM will need BCM, TCM, etc probably among other things... Not gonna be pretty.
The crank sensor (there are 2 on the 3100/3400) that is by the pulley needs to be swapped over from the 3400. That is the 24x one. Now the one you need is 7x which is in the block and controls the main spark delivery to the ICM. On the LX9 it uses a different trigger wheel inside on the crank which is like 45 or54x or something crazy. So it will not work to use that. That's why the WOT external trigger is for. You put that on the outside and it has a 7x wheel so you can use the old trigger and work with the exsisting PCM...
it's a nessasary evil unless you take the crank out, remove the trigger wheel and put a custom one on that is 7x. Joseph Upson did that with his 3900.
All the info is in the sticky thread man, just read up.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

yah i looked through it and got somewhat confused and tired of reading really...lol. I different about the computer right after i posted...yah oh well. I just depends on whether i decide to go with the 3500 or not...still debating, and i guess the external crank sensor is necessary, but not an evil...its a nice piece of machinery and art. It would be a viable option for an easier drop in engine...just need to make a bracket to put it right on the front cover so it doesnt have to mount on the frame or what not...

It doesn't mount on the frame... LOL it mounts to the block. If it mounted to the frame, you'd have to have solid welded motor mounts hahaha.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

On my 3500 the AC from my 99 GA bolted up without any mods.
The cam sensor from the 3500 works fine just have to wire it up with the correct colours, the ground and signal wires are in different locations on the 3500 cam sensor.3200 Hybrid 9.317 @ 77.87 mph, 14.343 @ 95.54 mph N/A on street tires

Hmm yeah the newer 99+ cars probably use the same compressor as the 3500. My bad.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)
