I'd hate having to clean it... you'd have to drop the pan to do so...

BUT i think if you prep the surface and pick a good location you should be able to get it to hold without ripping off the pan and attaching itself to the crank.

why not just use a magnetic drain plug??? i mean yah they would be nice, but would they have any effect on magnetizing the crank as it whips past these magnets??? or magnetizing metal particles that come off and stick to any of the number of iron inside the engine?

there is alot of metal particles in my oil right now from spinning a rod bearing, i was looking to try and remove anything that might get back up into the system.

          is rod bearing metal magnetic?

some of the steel core or steel lined ones are, but all of the sealed power bearings for our engines are alum A series...unless you use some special clevite ones, they like to use steel sometimes on the back...thats what gives them the funny color on the back of them

you usually want a bearing that is softer than the rod/crank but sometimes that cannot be avoided...that way if the oil press goes down, then you dont completely detroy the crank/rod or weld them together...most of the time

Bearings are non-ferrous. Try sticking a magnet to one.

              Most "steel" bearings are stainless.
