yesterday i noticed that it was getting a little noisey again so i went ahead and pulled it last night.. #1 hadn't spun yet but it was about to.. and #5 was the same.

i allready swapped in a spare piston/rod for #1 and there isn't any damage to the #5 rod so it's staying.. Crank is going into the machine shop tomorrow to get ground 10/10 and hopefully it'll be back on the road ASAP.

all the other bearings look like new

Doesn't seem like its black and blue. Looks like it was just overloaded.

          I wonder what is happening.....

Do you have a dampener on there or an UDP?

why dont you put locktite on the other side of the bearing on the cap...dieselers do it alot for spinning bearings and it seems to work. the green stuff works. otherwise i would flush the entire engine out and get a brand new set of bearings...maybe you just got a bad batch? i can get you some from GM for a good price

Wow. All I have to say is I envy you guys for having the time and know-how to do this stuff. Half the time I don't know what's going on but it's neat to read and learn.

Sorry, I'm done hijacking this thread.

Now get that puppy back on the road

                Dave:
Did you ever determine where these pieces you found in the oil pan came from?

I ask because a friend just pulled a piece that looks eerily similar out of his LS1 oil pan. Yes, it was making some not-so-good noises.

those would be the rollers from a rocker arm...the LS engines are very bad about doing that...that is why harland sharp has the upgraded LS rockers where they use a heavy duty bearing and keeper on the side because they fall apart fast. maybe you need to check the rockers and make sure they are ok

That's kinda what my though was, since when we pulled the valve covers off one of the rocker arms was really loose, and the lifter collapsed. He thought they looked too big to be needle bearings from the trunion on the rocker arm.....
Maybe he doesn't need to pull the motor after all.

AND make sure to use a magnetic drain pan plug..just to keep that stuff from working its way to the other parts of the engine...

yah alot of people think its from the lifter, but it never is...the gm rockers just arent too good at keeping the bearings in them...but the harland sharp ones are good piece of mind. they usually find that after excessive valvetrain noise, and they have grenaded engines just from those tiny things

i have a FFP UDP, I'm seriously considering swapping back to a 3400 pully though I have a couple around here somewhere...

Probably a good move. I'm considering the same.

I heard a tip from a guy that used to build race engines. Put a touch of LocTite on the backsides of the bearings, being sure not to plug the oil feel holes. He says you'll never spin a bearing again...

I have a 3400 and am planning on a helluva build over the winter to drop in the corsica. if i dont end up going to B.C
