  • Looking for Forged Pistons

So I now find my self in the market for forged pistons for my 3.4. Does anybody know a company that makes them or will I have custom order them?

i say go with JE.. wiseco said the didnt *have time* to make mine after i sent them a sample piston/chamber.. je knows there stuff. make sure you acually measure YOUR block and get all the info from YOUR block. there all a little different and you may as well get the perfect to you engine. it wouldnt be a bad idea to have a machine shop fill out your order sheet

im not a fan of weisco, they cut corners and cost to much. i bought a set of pistons from diamond, full floating pins, polished, .030, 26cc dish, low tension metric rings forged and material added to strengthen. pistons were $74 a pop and the total bill was just shy of $800 for 6 pistons, rings, h-13pins. these are built to way higher standards than weisco. i sent my sample in on a thursday and received the pistons the following thursday! and $200 under there quote. ill post pics in my engine built thread which will be coming and you will see they are a very nice part.
should add im in winnipeg mb, canada so to get a set of custom forged pistons in a week is insane

why whould you measure the block? the block should be machined to match the piston

because they need all the info on your block to make them. y not make the piston to fit your block? there custom anyways. i had my block honed (didnt need to be bored) and my cylinders were slightly larger that factory spec.

they also need to know combustion chamber CCs, would you want to guess on that and get the wrong ratio? maybe yours are a little different that some1 elses that has measured them. rod eye? mine were out of round and too big for a factory pin. if i had just gone with spec i wouldnt have known. they were bored over to .912

it just seems like its stupid not to get the measurements off your own engine. can you get away with out doing it? probly

Heard nothing but good things about Diamond pistons. If I don't go with CP, Id go with Diamond. JE is OK.

But if your not going insane boosted, I'd go with whom ever has them in stock and cheap.

obviusly you cc the heads/gasket, pins you can just run the Oe size if your rod eyes arent oe size and there not a full floting pin the rods belong in the garbage. for the block just set the piston down the bore .005" or so and deck and bore/hone to the piston size / height. just honing sounds like a bad idea if your dropping $800+ on pistons why not clean up the taper and true up the bores, if your not prepared to go all the way with your machining forge is a waste. i make 392hp and 480lbft @10psi on a stock rebuilt bottom end with keith black silvolites.

im not sure what youre talkin about but when u want a block bored (by a reputable shop) they WONT bore the block w/out having the pistons. sure u want it .020 over or more or less, but that doesnt mean every piston is the same size. u cant have a wrist pin bored over to .912 when stock is .912... like i said...a reputable company or shop will do the foot work for u if u want 9.0:1 or 9.5:1 and so on.

ok that kinda makes sense. ive never had a block bored because mine didnt need it. so for the bore spec they need you would just add .010 or .020 or whatever to the factory bore size? but stock wrist pin size is .906 i believe. .912 is a ford size... i would have to check to be sure...

I was looking at silvolite pistons, but I dosn't look like they are forged...chevette boy, are you able to crank out 480 ft/lbs on cast pistons? Because I sure couldn't - A ring land broke off

Thats not always true, I had a shop bore my old 3400 .030 over and they did NOT need the pistons, he knew the stock measurement and the size of a 30 over piston... and that a standard size... Now if they are not that when you buy them I would return them because the shop that made the pistons made them wrong. Measurements are measurements, they are either wrong or right, and if you have a block done .020 or .030 over, ANY .020 or .030 piston should fit unless its made to the wrong spec.

And you can dump that amount of power on a stock piston, you just need to be EXTRA carefull that the mixture and tune is right, and NOT a lot of timing is used since its boosted.

Did you tune this with a wideband before the dyno?

If your trying to build an engine for performance, you always bore the block to the pistons. New pistons are never exactly on spec due to manufacturing tolerances. Those tolerances would make them VERY expensive to do otherwise.
