it all depends on what you want in the long run. You have several options availble to you. You can either do an engine swap (3100/3400/3500 are about the most straigthforward ones), or you can do some work to your 2.8 MPFI. Personally, I have always wanted to do some work to the 2.8 MPFI. With the shorter stroke, it has potential to be a high revving screamer, but it will take some work.
If you want to keep the 2.8, I would start out with swapping out the heads, upper, and lower intake manifolds for the newer 3100/3400 ones. It will reqire some work, but it is not impossible to do. I would also get a cam for it.Taylor

This is the hybrid guide that the cavalier guys use. most of it would apply to your setup.
It's an easy way to gain some good power.

yes, the 3100 heads will bolt right in place of your stock 2.8 heads. There is no real modifications that need to be done.
The only modifications come from hooking the rest of the engine to the car after the heads and intakes are swapped out.
The Exhaust downpipe for the 2.8 is different than the 3100 exhaust downpipe, some of the heater hoses and pipes are different, and you have to change some of the wireing (move some sensors, lengthen other ones).Taylor

you can bolt up your stock 2.8 exhaust manifolds to the 3x00 heads, it's not the best thing for performance but it will work.
If you are dead set on keeping the 2.8 and doing the hybrid then i'd suggest this engine combo:
your stock bottom end
Crane H260-2 cam
Headgaskets for a 2.8 Camaro (thinner for more compression)
2000+ 3100 or 3400 heads (same)
2000+ Lower intake manifold
2004+ 3500 LX9 plenum
62mm TB
a pair of LX9 3500 front exhaust manifolds (they kick ass)
2.5" exhaust with a good muffler
It's gonna cost a bit in parts but you'll make sone decent power..
Or stick in a whole stock 3400 engine which would make more power then the 2.8 hybrid.
